Smaller rubber feet that don't fall off

1470 points posted to Inspiron products by jtrpop 07/02/07

The rubber feet on my Inspiron are big and get snagged when slipping into my computer bag. One has already fallen off. Make them slimmer and less prone to falling off.

Agreed, they fall off when a user pushes the notebook across a table. If anything use a solid hard plastic or provide extra feet like the extra nubbin's that are included on the nubbin pointer notebooks.

I agree, but with me for some reason, they never fall off.

Well I haven't knocked them off but users do it all the time, after two are gone they remove the rest so it rests evenly.

hey, we have the same problem on most of ours.. My Network admin actually called up our rep to buy replacement rubber feet for our inspiron.. dudes.. DELL WANTS LIKE $30 for a pack of 4!!!!! That absolutely blew our minds. Them little tiny rubber feet!!!

Now you know why we just remove the rest to even it out.

I Agree, they are so annoying when they fall off but on new laptops they are no longer putting them on....so nothing relaly to worry about now...Right!

Depends on the model.

What if the whole bottom was rubberized? Of course room for the vents and screw hole and the like but then the things couldnt fall off/be uneven and it wouldn't slide. Worth making into a seperate idea?

yah, i like that idea.

I don't matter size, but the "falling off" part annoys me too.

Instead of putting rubber feets they could just make bumps in the case, if they need room for the air.

Even better though I would like a design, where the space below the laptop is not needed at all, so ttha I don't have to care on what surface I put it.

I've had numerous laptop users lose the rubber feet. I have two of them at home and I don't even own a laptop personally (its work's). I think they need to screw the rubber feet in. Make them with two layers 1) Rounded rubber 2) Hard plastic bottom. The screw goes through the rubber and plastic into the laptop base. This way, the rubber foot would be held in by the screw and would not come off because the glue was weakened.

Until Dell fixes this one, I think they should provide replacement feed for all of us who have lost some.Here's an idea promoting the idea that Dell should provide replacement feet to make up for the existing ones that can only be described as defective.

i took my rubber feet off the underside and super-glued them back on. seemed to do the trick.

Assuming you can find where it fell off, otherwise you'll end up with an off balanced notebook when you rest it on a flat surface.

I disagree with this idea. The rubber feet on the both of the system help with air circulation and the cooling of the system. Making them smaller would restrict teh air flow.

@heidi_hodges.
One would hope "and design adequate airflow while you're at it" would be part of the project. Moving the air vents from under the laptop to the sides (as I think Sony, Apple, and? HP do) could be done along with the small foot redesign work.

@heidi_hodges:
Some (if not many or most) Dell laptops already have cooling fans on the sides (my Dell Inspiron XPS Generation 2 has cooling fans on the sides), not the bottom, so making the rubber feet smaller would not make any problems with the fans.

One of my Dell laptop feet fell off today, and I couldn't find it... Luckily, I hung onto the old battery that was recalled awhile back, so I just pulled the foot off it to replace the one I lost. Who knows how long it'll stay stuck, though.

So the request is a smaller "footprint" on the feet of our laptop heh.

Has anyone see this on currently shipping laptops, or utilization of something "other" than rubber feet? If so, please post.

@tleavit: Are you sure of the cost on the replacement? Which model of Inspiron was this?

So the people with the old rubber ones are left out to dry?

@jorge:

There's an older Idea that Dell send extra rubber feet to people who ask for them. I think you voted for it.

It is quite funny going into a business meeting and all the people with Dell's have wobbly 3-legged laptops.
