PVC Free Computers

490 points posted to Environment by badblood 07/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

PVC and/or BFR are toxic chemicals used in your current manufacturing processes of Dell. Nokia recently phased out these chemicals and reached number one in the Greenpeace 'electronics guide'.

Stop using PVC!

Honestly, I'd like an all wood edition of a notebook. Metal frame and keys though.

Yes that'd be nice. Reg had an interesting idea for bamboo computers too.

Bamboo, what about good old Oak? Or at the very least Pine?

Oak is very heavy.

PVC is not a problem unless you put it in a landfill. In a PC it is _NOT_ an environmental hazard. Please do more research than just "Website x says...." when posting ideas!

There isn't a backlash against PVC for plumbing systems.... why is there one in consumer electronics? It is cheap, durable, and currently has no alternative. (Okay.... there is ABS, but that is no better than PVC)

For research from a MUCH more reliable source, see :

More metal hybrids, less platics.
It also conducts heat better, thus causing the laptop to use less energy.
and it is easier to recycle,

As for bamboo :

Thanks for this -- we have been removing PVC from our products for a number of years and have committed to completely remove PVC from system design by 2009 as we identify acceptable alternatives that do not adversly affect safety health or the environment. Our chemical use policy is a good resource to check out which you can link to from the front of www.dell.com/environment

the status for this before was 'NOT LIKELY'.

Metals are always nice.
Aluminum should be avoided if possible however, as it costs the environment a lot of damage to be produced, and generates fine metal dust which is a known health hazard.
