vista ultimate or business for new inspiron line

200 points posted to Inspiron products, Operating Systems, Laptops by goomoo 06/26/07

For a lot of people, and I mean the vast majority, the whole point of a laptop is to be able to do things on the go, while mobile, otherwise remotely. Limiting our choices on OS to only basic or home premium will scare away the majority of your customers when you tell them "no, you can't do things remotely with this laptop. if you flatten it and install another OS, we can't support the machine." Personally I can not purchase a machine without the ability to work remotely. And don't tell me to look at the business line, the business line can't do jack that i need it do other than work remotely. Come on guys, this is like giving a kid a tricycle with no wheels!

Blame Microsoft and their abusive pricing scheme. Dell doesn't make much money (if any) from the sale of a Windows license, so it's in their best interest to offer the cheapest version so their computers appear to be cheaper compared to their competitors.

Beyond that, I suspect that Dell _does_ make money (perhaps not paid in cash, but in discounts and co-marketing funds) from Microsoft for installing feature-reduced versions of windows with the expectation that these users will pay again upgrading to Ultimate. They'd be less likely to do that upgrade from one of the Business versions.

Why offer just Vista? Many people (myself included) want XP on the new Inspirons, but Dell won't give it to us.

Do we have any reason to believe it's compatible with the new systems? I know it's pretty tough to get some Win98 and apparently even Win2K drivers these days; and it's not like you can just download the source and recompile for the older Windows OS's.
