Dell staff can help the environment

340 points posted to Environment by badblood 06/25/07 **REVIEWED**

* Save energy by turning off lights and equipment at night. Turning off idle equipment can save up to $100 per workstation over a year.
* Encourage your building manager to have energy and water audits performed and to develop water and energy management plans. Replacing old equipment with water–efficient and energy–efficient fixtures can significantly reduce operating costs.
* Use the stairs instead of the elevator for short trips. You'll save electricity and get some exercise too!
* Bring your lunch to work in reusable containers and take home recyclables and compostables if collection facilities don't exist at the office.
* If your workplace does not have an organized recycling program, encourage your employer and fellow employees to start one. Organize one yourself by (a) establishing conveniently located collection sites, (b) providing collection boxes or containers, (c) informing and reminding co–workers of the sites, and (d) arranging for pick–ups by a recycling firm.
* Try to have items that no longer work repaired, rather than discarding and replacing them, or donate them for repair and future use.
* Encourage your employer to purchase and, if appropriate, manufacture products that are less harmful to the environment.
* Follow and encourage environmentally safe practices in the storage, use and disposal of hazardous wastes at the work site.
* Team up! If your workplace does not have car pools, volunteer to organize one.
* Always turn taps off tightly so they don't drip. Watch for and report drips or leaks to the building manager. Be sure someone repairs them promptly.
* Troubled toilets. Watch for leaks from toilet tanks into toilet bowls, at the base of toilets, or around urinals, and report them promptly to the building manager.
* Look for the Recycled logo on paper and other office supplies. All purchases should be made with environmental considerations in mind.
* Double–up! Produce double–sided documents and photocopies.
* Reduce paper usage by using electronic mail.
* Collect paper that has previously been used on one side and re–use it for fax messages, draft documents and notepads.
* Pass items you no longer need on to co–workers who can make use of them.
* Save and re–use binders, file folders, envelopes, paper clips, elastics, etc.
* Use your own re–usable coffee cup, rather than a disposable cup.

The environment is a priority for our customers, but also for us employees. Dell does have a formal environmental management system that we use globally to manage own environmental, health and safety (EHS) performance. A lot of your ideas, like an organized recycling program, are a part of our current environmental initiatives.

Check out the details: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/environment/en/mfg_ops_ma...

Thanks for the idea; we are always looking into new ways to help our planet!

Badblood -

Thank you for the fantastic ideas, which can be applied to greening your office in general, not just here at Dell. I have implemented many of your ideas into my daily life (such as taking the stairs, recycling everything I can, and reducing my paper usage). Of course, those are ones that have to be personal choices and would be very difficult for Dell to enforce. There were some ideas there that dell has made an inegral part of its corporate culture though. Everyday I notice more and more recycling bins popping up all over the office, and our building was recarpeted a couple of years ago with 100% recycled materials. The life cycle of the computers were are currently using for our daily needs have been extended to reduce waste. Did you catch our recent announcement that our Round rock campus is now completely powered with renewable energy? Have a look at it here: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/04/11/green-is-in-the-air.aspx.

Becoming green is one of the company's top priorities. We have a great recycling program, our products are getting increasingly more efficient, and our Plant a Tree for Me program continues to help clean our air with aggressive planting campaigns across the globe (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/environment/en/tree?c=us&...) Of course, there is still plenty left to be done, and we need folks like you to keep telling us what more needs to be done.

Thank you,
Todd Dwyer
