DellConnect (download via FTP)

430 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support, Software by sysace 06/20/07 **REVIEWED**

DellConnect - Please make this tool available via FTP (public or private) rather than just via http protocol. This would make remote troubleshooting sessions much easier for browser related issues.

Currently I have to download an alternate browser (Firefox) via dos mode ftp, complete installation, then use that to download DellConnect client software... a direct ftp link would decrease handle time and increase CE in my opinion.

FTP is an option we are considering. Check out what andrea_l, DellConnect program manager has to say.

This is a good idea since windows based browsers are famous for getting infected with malware sometimes to a point that the browser is no longer usable. promoted

Firefox is as easily infected now as IE, welcome to the mainstream.

Sysace, most people dont even know what FTP is, let alone how to use it. It would just be easier if Dell offered it as additional software or media.

obishan, as a tech support agent supporting Dell customers, I'm not necessarily expecting them to know what FTP is. My initial point was made from my perspective as a tech agent attempting to assist a customer remotely... the current DellConnect software is only available via http.

When IE gets hijacked or infected, it's usually a result of an uninformed/educated user, commonly a person who is also not familiar with alternate browsers. Repairing these issues is much easier if a remote connection is available, but to install Dell's remote software, a functioning browser is required for the download. As such, downloading a browser via FTP is my only option to be able to then download and install the Dell remote software (DellConnect). I'm just saying that if DellConnect were directly available via FTP, downloading Firefox or another browser would not necessarily be required.

Hope that clarifies my intention... I should have clarified that this was from a tech's perspective, not an end user.

Heh, I figured as much Sysace :) I too am a tech for Dell, L3/RS at that.

I understand fully actually what your idea is, its just one of those types where we would then have to educate the customer on how to do it. And getting one to DellConnect alone can take a long time. Heard of people on the phone for up near 2 hours explaining to them where the United States of America was on the map, or on the newer link, where the "I agree" button is at..

Believe me mate, I know, I understand, and I suffer with ya :)

We’re investigating options for download of the DellConnect code prior to a customer needing it. We’ll keep FTP open as an option for consideration. Thanks for the idea and stay tuned….
