Stop Offering Vista

-60 points posted to Operating Systems by kenjennings 06/14/07

It's been out long enough for everyone to realize its a dog. It makes Dell's perfectly good, new computers run like old computers. It's buggy, expensive, unintuitive, and provides no worthwhile practical features. The people who die for eye candy are probably using Macs already. The power users who know (or want to know) how to get close to their computers use Linux. So, about all that's left are gamers -- and Vista isn't wonderfully compatible as a multi-gigabyte boot loader for games. The only real reason to keep Vista is fear of Microsoft.

I would comment that the Play Station line of products, the Wii, XBOX, XBOX 360, and AppleTV are the gamer's stations of the future... PSP is cool for gaming on the go...

PCs games will have their place too, just not in the E.U. once video games are banned by Germany.

It is important for all those countries to Do As They Are Told by the Germans, especially when they are told
to learn to become pacifist tools, and not even have thought crimes about defending their own country or family..

I've got a Wii for games, and an N64. (And an Atari 800 for that fact). I'll probably get the expanded version of the PS3 with Linux for Christmas. I've had a few games on PCs, but too many games installed makes Windows flaky, and the dedicated consoles just have better games.

In case you weren't aware, ken, Vista is about to be the only OS (PC)-gamers use as it will be the only OS that supports DirectX 10. I've been running vista for a few weeks now and it runs great. The only reason it's having any problems (problems which I'm not experiencing) is because it's an immense change from the way Windows has been running until now. I'm sorry but Vista is not just a new and pretty face on the same operating old operating system.

Also, if Vista makes your computer feel slow, buy a video card worth having or turn off Aero. Aero is more GPU dependent than CPU dependent. And your average grandma user probably isn't buying a Dell with a GeForce 8800 Ultra. You're doing well if she breaks away from the Intel integrated

EDIT: Also if Vista feels like it is running slow, you should be sure to turn off the power management features responsible for throttling your CPU and other hardware.

@kenjennings, this idea is not gonna get out of the negative, regardless of how much I agree that Macs and Linux can do everything you want. But as it is it's just making Linux look bad. Consider deleting it maybe? (Please!)

I do not think DELL could stop offering VISTA, they are bound by contract under Microsoft to sell Vista...

I am keen on the MS Surface software - but not in a $20,000 coffee table.

A 19" Tablet PC with a stand and touch screen would be better.

so, dude, i should stop using my xps 1210 with vista that runs absolutely great, just because you don't like it?

go elsewhere ken. this place is for ideas. just leave.

Polyzelf: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2143705,00.asp Summary: Vista sucks. DX10 is still just promises and will be for a long time. Any gamer waiting for DX10 will see their favorite computer rendered obsolete before DX10 is a factor in the gaming market. The Kool-aid you're drinking seems a bit too concentrated -- add more water.

bennish: Nobody said you had to stop using your 1210 with the Vista millstone dragging it down. If you like running this year's hardware with last year's performance, then enjoy.

but i wouldn't be able to get it from dell, kenjennings.

have you actually used vista? why are you telling them to discontinue it? Why on earth should they? I also don't want linux, but i won't tell them to stop supplying it. i just DONT BUY IT.
Please stick your head up your own arse somewhere else ken.

PS my m1210 runs faster on vista than xp. Could you please explain that? It's ok, i'll wait. really. Come up with an explanation yet?
kenjennings
06/20/07
"have you actually used vista?" Yes. My wife bought an Inspiron 1505 recently. The one with the fastest dual core CPU and 2G RAM. With the thing plugged into power, power management turned off, and every other hack recommended it's no inspiration. Her old 4700C is working again after a fresh XP reinstall and it is MUCH faster at everything than her new laptop -- it just doesn't have as much useless eye candy.

"my m1210 runs faster on vista than xp. Could you please explain that? " If all you do is run ReadyBoost benchmarks then I suppose it may be possible. Did you install XP without the appropriate drivers? Search for "m1210 XP" on Dell's tech support site and you'll find tons of information from people who reverted to XP to help you out. (In case you didn't notice: many people revert their XPS m1210 to XP.) Vista is inherently so much faster and efficient than XP -- riiiight -- that explains why MicroSoft's minimum hardware requirement for Vista is so much higher than XP. not.

All that useless eye-candy costs CPU / GPU cycles somehow...
computational power better used by your applications or games.

Can you turn off the fancy grahics and go with a bare bones win2k look like you can with winXP?
reg
06/20/07
Yes, it is in the display / performance settings - under Advanced select 'Best Performance'

You're Windows VISTA will revert to the look and feel of Windows 3.1 - All fancy pants stuff disabled.

It will work significantly faster, and most people are familiar with the look and feel of Windows 3.1
cosh
06/20/07
That's not 3.1 it's 9x/2k. This is 3.1: Windows_3.11_workspace.png.

Anyway, while Vista can revert to the old look, it doesn't look great, it seems to leave too much blank space around in Explorer and the Start menu because it wasn't really designed for it.
lamar_air
06/20/07
When the 'Best Performance' graphics option is chosen then how does performance compare to winXP with say graphics all enabled?
reg
06/20/07
The idea is that VISTA can turn OFF all eye candy, wasteful animations, and other functionless nonsense.

Your CPU and GPU power is reserved for what You are doing, your applications performance,
not being consumed by the OS . . .
kenjennings
06/20/07
And then you're left with just a less compatible version of XP (or 9x/2K). So, then there is no point to Vista.

Well, there is one really good point to Vista. Since it's forced every manufacturer to raise the lowest common denominator for hardware it's easy and reasonably affordable to get powerful equipment better utilized without Vista. Also, many opt to toss their older, yet perfectly good systems that don't meet Vista's hardware demands, so there is a ready supply of nice hardware that can be had for a song and dance.

It forces product churning... consumers being forced to buy even more powerful 2GB RAM / 3 GHz systems,
just to open Notepad and type text or play Solitaire !
kenjennings
06/20/07
Forced product churning -- that's not very Green, is it? More new PCBs, power supplies, and batteries loaded with toxins circulating around the world killing gentle redwoods, clubbing baby seals, mangling baby ducks, and tricking birds into flying into glass windows. Thanks Microsoft. Thanks Vista.

06/20/07
Ya i think the MS board of directors may not have taken the ducks and environment into consideration when they were looking for something to keep the money coming in the front door and keep competitors out of their back yard a little longer.
cosh
06/20/07
Aye. I could not possibly be keeping further away from Vista.

06/20/07
"If all you do is run ReadyBoost benchmarks then I suppose it may be possible." - uh - i've never even used readyboost. and i don't know how to run benchmarks. I just, y'know... USE my computer. To surf the net, play games, do work, use media center, record shows, burn dvds, play music. you know, useless things like that.

"Did you install XP without the appropriate drivers?" - i don't know. i just go with all the automatic drivers. in fact vista finds more and better drivers for my stuff so far than xp ever did. basically i don't do anything special. fresh install xp - fine. fresh install vista - fine. no problems.

I don't want to see info on people who revert. they can revert if they like.

back to topic... WHY ARE YOU TELLING THEM TO *STOP* OFFERING VISTA? Why? What's the point? Just get XP! noone here understands your stupid reasoning. Why STOP offering something? If you were saying 'stop trying to push it' or 'stop recommending it', sure. But stop offering it altogether? Why would they do that when you can also choose XP and Linux? If makes no freaking sense. Is something wrong with you?

And why are you talking about minimum hardware? We're talking about windows on new dells, right? Does dell sell any 500mhz computers with 256mb ram? Whatever you buy new from them is gonna be able to run vista or xp, so what's the difference? Besides which my older dell x1 (pentium m, 512mb ram) ran vista no problems too. It's a perfectly fine OS... not necessarily better or worse than XP. XP is fine. So is Vista. Let it go. do something constructive.

I am sure Vista will be ready to use in 2 or 3 years after Vista Service Pack 3 comes out.

I am willing to wait . . .

I still wish they'd delete this idea. Sure they'll stop offering it, the moment that Windows 7 Service Pack 1 comes out. Not before.

Oh, well. People were complaining about negative ideas cluttering up the system. I only submitted this half as a joke due to a "Stop Offering XP" idea.

For the other half, Vista really does suck -- it sucks the performance right out of my wife's Inspiron 1505 laptop. Most of the time my old hp 5295 laptop is more responsive (Darn that Linux!).

The Wifi setup for Vista on her laptop was hell. Vista demands an insecure setup broadcasting its SSID to be able to create a connection. How lame. I pity anyone who doesn't know computers trying to do anything with Vista.

if people want to use vista, i'm sure they can buy it and install it themselves :)

Yea, its super easy right? Who needs it preinstalled, its such an easy familiar task to reinstall it that eveyone knows how to do it these days :D

there are also sound environmental reasons for not offering vista. archaeologists predict that we will look back to land-fill sites in 50 years and see a layer of discarded computer parts marking the introduction and adoption of vista.

Why Would you get rid of Vista. Wouldn't Be A Fair choice to Customer just to have a choice of Linux.

08/26/07
i just love the comment of reg's earlier, about the 'eye-candy' affecting gaming...

newsflash... you don't play games inside minimized windows with the 'eye candy' around them! when the eye candy's running, you're on the desktop. when the game's running, the eye candy is OFF.

It is in fact the same principle your beloved osx uses. Use the GPU WHILE IT'S IDLE.

davmcn, they're just being stupid. they're trying to convince everyone that if you stop using windows, it'll bring about world peace. freaking irritating, i know.

I will take BeOS over Vista. How abot that!

P.S.
I read somewhere that one of the top executives at Microsoft admited that current Windows offering (read: Vista) is just to bloated and MS will have to go back to basics, with a leaner, faster and efficient Windows.

Regards,
T.S.
