Refillable Ink Tanks in Printers

320 points posted to Printers and Ink by kcobley 06/13/07

Theres no reason for Dell to paticipate in the inkjet printer cartridge scam (that's what it is a scam, Iv'e opened cartridges from various manufacturers and ink content varies from 8 millilitres to 12 millilitres but I haven't opened one of the newer Large Dell cartridges so can't comment on them) If the cartridges sell for between $20-$40 depending on mfg and contain the quantity of ink above that values the ink between $2.50-$4.00 AU per Millilitre, man that's more expensive than Gold. Canon ink can be bought in Taiwan for around $24 AU per 100 millilitres so howcome ink valued at 16cents gets sold at $20 plus in a cartridge. CUT THE SCAM SELL PRINTERS WITH REFILLABLE INK TANKS AND SELL THE INK IN 1OOML BOTTLES, THEN THE NEED FOR LASER PRINTERS DISSAPPEARS UNLESS U NEED HIGH SPEED PRINTING.

Samsung's new laser printers have separate toner and drum assemblies:

So, you can just pop in a new toner pack, without having to replace the whole inside of your laser printer -

UNLike H.P.'s insane hollow laser printers - where you throw away half the printer each time you run out of toner ink!

Gal:A traditional diamond ring would be nice, but I really can use this great Samsung Color Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner!

then dell would have to deal with all the customers complaining that their print quality is bad because the printhead is fubared. It would end up driving warranty costs through the roof with nonwarranty claims. the reason they are designed as a replaceable is because all portions of the cartridge eventually need to be replaced.

Be more sane about printer ink than HP - don't go to war against 3rd party ink vendors and don't bribe your retail channel

I see Dell and Staples recently did some retail deal ... http://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/stories/2007/10/22/daily18.html ...

Please don't work "with" staples the same way HP allegedly did:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071218-hp-and-staples-accused-of-collu... ...

class-action lawsuit accusing hardware maker HP and office supply retailer Staples of colluding to inflate the price of printer ink cartridges in violation of federal antitrust law. According to the suit, HP allegedly paid Staples $100 million to refrain from selling inexpensive third-party ink cartridges, although the suit doesn't make it clear how plaintiff Ranjit Bedi arrived at that figure.

For most printer companies, ink is the bread and butter of their business. The price of ink for HP ink-jet printers can be as much as $8,000 per gallon,
...
The printer makers have been waging an all-out war against third-party vendors that sell replacement cartridges at a fraction of the price. The tactics employed by the printer makers to maintain monopoly control over ink distribution for their printing products have become increasingly aggressive. In

If you would embrace 3rd party ink vendors for your printers; that'd be a great selling point and I think a lot of customers would flock to you and shun HP.

Perhaps even advertise

  • Our ink doesn't cost $8000/gallon.
  • We don't try to stop you from refilling with the ink of your choice
  • We don't have to bribe our distribution channel like our competitors do [ok, just kidding on that one]
