I want this one too.

Xubuntu works faster, uses less RAM, and thus lets you use more of your machine's power for what you want to work on...

reg: ... xubuntu

How's xubuntu different than Ubuntu after running "sudo apt-get install icewm" ;
and while I'm at it, how's kubuntu different than Ubuntu with "apt-get install kde"?

(currently trying KDE on my E1505N; without installing a different OS).

Sure as long as the glue used doesn't remain after the sticker falls off. I'd prefer an option to have the sticker still in its fresh state un plastered on my new computer, that way I can give it to the kids to paste it on the back of the local street signs where all stickers belong.

I prefer no stickers at all. The bottom of my laptop is still slightly discolored where I removed the Vista certificate of authenticity (that sucker did NOT want to come off!)

Actually I want the stickers - but not pre-stuck to the computer. That way I could use the Ubuntu sticker to cover the Windows 98 sticker on my other Dell running Ubuntu.

I SUPPORT THE FUSION POWER MOVEMENT!

MY IDEA:
1. Establish a very large fusion reactor using simple elements a safe distance from your base of operations,
say about 8 light minutes away from your home.

2. Install Fusion Power receivers,

3. Use the fusion reactor for all your energy for a few billions of years, until the fuel runs out.

That's actually a rather cool looking sticker. It would definitely be a conversation piece:

Other person, who looks at my laptop: "Hey, isn't that supposed to say "Powered by Windows XP?"

Me: "Nope, it runs Ubuntu Linux, pre-installed by Dell."

Other person: "Wow...really? When did this happen? Can I see?"

Me: "Sure, no problem!"

And it goes from there.

Less stickers is better imo.
i always pick them off as soon as i get the computer.
They don't really "add" anything.. it's just extra stuff.
you already "know" what is inside the computer after all. right ?

06/25/07
Um...those are stickers from System76, another Ubuntu computer manufacturer.
system78system78system78system78
You do know that Dell cannot legally use those, regardless of the fact that they are free, right?

Dell could, of course, design their own. Too much work, IMHO. I would just peel the sticker off. I am proud of by Ubuntu dell (its a laptop, with a peeled off Windows sticker, and not really a true Ubuntu Dell), but the nice thing about Linux is you can make it look and act however you want. I like clean and smooth, not flashy.

And jmxz, there is a difference between sudo apt-get install kde and sudo apt-get install kubuntu. Kubuntu includes a bunch of packages that fit with KDE, like Kontact, Konqurer, Klipper, Adept Package Manager (Synaptic for KDE), and more. While some of those would be merged as dependencies, most would not.

However, for anyone who wants to install kubuntu over their ubuntu, just type:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu
And once that is done, and you have selected kdm over gdm, paste in the command found here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekde. (Xubuntu is the same, just install xubuntu instead of kubuntu).
jmxz
06/25/07
dylnuge:

"You do know that Dell cannot legally use those,"

And what law might that be?

Dell uses stuff from other companies all the time (Intel's chips; Canonical's software; Alienware computers). There's no reason they couldn't create a business agreement with system78 to use their stickers legally - in the extreme case, the same way they did with Alienware (a purchase).

If they don't want graffiti on their computers, perhaps? I'd consent for sure if they went with the "stickers included separately" or "stickers optional" idea, but I would definitely demote this idea as is. I don't like having graffiti on my computer.

Dell would expend little effort to choose some clip art and make stickers. Some examples are shown here.
http://www.cafepress.com/buy/unix/linux/-/sort_byDesignScore
I found some clipart and ordered some stickers for fun from cafepress. I uploaded the art, and the stickers arrived 2 days later. EASY.Or, just use the art you find on cafepress.
Search Google or Cafepress for "madtux" or "ubuntu" and "powered by ubuntu" or "powered by linux" and steal the image.
If I knew how, I'd paste them in this post. I guess I am a Flintstone, darnit.

@.chris:

It's an annoying advertisement to be glued on a new product. No doubt companies would be happy to play Dell to glue advertisements for porn sites and V1agra on their computers - and I'd find those less offensive than the Windows one (since I've never been ripped off by them; but I've often had to buy windows without wanting it).

jmxz
08/19/07
@unity: "I don't see whats wrong with stickers, "

I'm not so much against stickers in general --- if Dell wanted to sell physical space on their computers for advertising stickers from a range of sources - I wouldn't really mind. The problem is the particular advertising-stickers they're running.

Many Dells sold over the past few years say "designed for Microsoft windows" - and it's not obvious that this is just an advertisement . As the most important software I've run on such computers comes form a Microsoft competitor (Oracle); and considering that Microsoft has been involved with sabotaging competitor's products before (google dr dos lawsuit); such a microsoft advertisement can make customers feel pretty uneasy about running Oracle software on Dells.

In my opinion - clearly labeled advertising stickers Dell might want to include would be OK. But the deceptive ads that Dell's currently gluing on the computers shouldn't be there.
coopersecurity
08/22/07
And how about Microsoft and Dell give out the processor and OS stickers as well, for free.
jmxz
08/23/07
@coopersecurity:

There are plenty of advertisers (snowboard companies, politicians, etc) happy to give out advertising stickers for free.
I just want Dell to be more selective about the advertising-stickers they pre-stick on their products --- especially avoiding ones from competitors of the most important software my workplace runs on Dells (oracle).
