Offer 3 LED lights of 16 choices for each on XPS desktops too

120 points posted to Dell Web Site, Desktops, Gaming by winoffice 06/08/07

There are 3 pairs of LED lights with 16 choices for each on XPS notebooks. Looks cool enough.

But what about XPS desktops? Here, we get only 1 LED light with only 7 choices. If Dell really wants XPS desktops to be just as suitable for gaming, then Dell should also offer the same thing (3 pairs of LED lights with the SAME -- not different, 16 choices) on XPS desktops -- maybe one pair on the top, another on the front, and the last on the sides. The one on the sides should bear the XPS logo, just as the one on the lid on the XPS notebooks does.

At least, change the systems already with the special lights so that they would have lights as above. I am not saying "Put the lights on all XPS systems" -- rather, just keep them on just one specialty desktop and on one specialty notebook. However, the specialty desktops should have a change on their lights in my opinion, and all other XPS systems should have optional but not mandatory lights -- not necessarily as much, nor as many options.

Quit duplicating the categories. Dumb site still blows.

"If Dell really wants XPS desktops to be just as suitable for gaming..."

What do lights have to do with gaming? They're just eye candy.

Dear kybarsfang,

So what? The lights are still cool, and many people prefer XPS for gaming exactly for this reason.

Oh, I'm definitely not disputing that they look cool. I just thought it was odd that the original poster thinks a system is not suitable for gaming unless it has colored lights. It's less of a bragging point or visual gratification without them, but hardware specs are more important for gaming than pretty shiney things. :)

Lights waste energy.

Right, .chris, and besides, lights is one of the ways in which XPS is easily distinguished from the rest. If there are no lights on at least one XPS desktop model, and at least on one XPS notebook models, then the XPS systems are, obviously, little more than the rest.

Well I agree with you, .chris, on your opinion that liquid cooling is not really necessary (I never use PCs for more than 4 hours a day), and it will be long before it will cost less than now. Not to mention that it is too powerful for most systems. However, the flashy lights do not take up so much PC power, so it will be easier to have them on XPS than the liquid cooling system. By the way, 410 and 210 do belong to the XPS series, so they are for gaming. Again, liquid cooling is not necessary, and Dell offers the high end models with lights and without liquid cooling.

How do you change the colors of the LEDs on the Dell XPS 720 desktop?

Anyone know how to change the color of the LEDs on the XPS 720? Someone told me to do that in the BIOS... (sorry if this sounds like spam, I just really want to know and have no other place to ask)

I think that they are changed through the BIOS (when you see the Dell startup screen, you press F2 to get into the BIOS). That is how I do with my Inspiron XPS Generation 2.

Yes I have that program on my XPS Gen 2 and it is called QuickSet. Last time I checked it still was available on the Dell Web site.
