The Long Life Laptop

410 points posted to Environment by ecogeek 06/08/07

Dell wants to make the most environmentally friendly computer in the world, and I think they can do it. But along with reducing hazardous substances, decreasing power consumption, and making sure machines get recycled, I think Dell needs to make a commitment to reduce their machines trash rate.

Through a variety of steps, including easy upgrades, prolonged warranties, built-to-last design, and an optional five-year, low-cost refurbishment plan, Dell could keep computers out of landfills by keeping them in the hands of consumers.

With today's level of technology, there's no reason why Dell can't produce a machine that works well for double or triple the typical life of a typical laptop.

I propose Dell designs a Long Life Laptop, which will be marketed to folks who don't need high-end processing, but want a computer that give them an excellent return on their investment for many years to come.

The length of life is dependent on you not Dell, if you buy a new one how is Dell to control your whims of some new feature? You want it upgradeable, get real, its impossible, thats been attempted before and you'll end up complaining its too big or too heavy or too ugly.
