Solar charged battery

50 points posted to Environment by sean.cody 06/07/07

Allow PC batteries to be charged via solar panel chargers. Charging should work in the same way and alongside conventional mains charging. In the case of solar charging, wires should connect to a portable solar panel which can be located next to a suitable office or home window.

Solar panels are very expensive. Unless you already have solar panels in your house this isn't really an option. "Portable" solar panels won't work either, unless you're talking about powering a calculator.

Good idea, but the reality is that the economics won't work at this point.

We need the compatibility for this to happen. This idea would add no extra costs. I have tried this my self and the main problem is compatibility.

This would be a real break through, if we really are able to use solar power to run computers atleast portables, some sort of panel on the top which looks nice as well as absorbs the radiation and runs the system , is a great idea, not sure how exactly this would work out, but would really make huge difference in the industry as well as to the environment.

Duplicate.

Idea is bad for many reasons: solar cells covering the back of the laptop would require days to charge the batteries without usage. Solar cells on the system would encourage people to leave the laptops in the sun, the resulting heat will shorten battery life.

Here’s a company that sells solar panels for the very purpose, notice that the power out put is far below power requirements of a typical laptop. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/07/notepower_bring.php

develop solar panels technology to load cells. The aim of such an action is to have an application on laptops.

it's not a dupe because the first dea was to install solar panels and i realized that it was lognto load. Here it is to work on the developement of these panels to make thme ready to be used.

So it's not a dupe, read all the title and you will see it.

Dell makes computers, not solar cells.

yes but it could be a good solution for innovation and to replace electric wire to load cells.

Can't wait till siger's laptop is only powered by a solar panel, we know he won't be posting much here.

Dell puts it's brand name on lots of things. Nothing wrong with developing solar cells or helping to develop them. As a company Dell has actually taken some sort of commitment to helping the environment. It says so on their web site. as a company Dell needs to be innovative and always be looking to get involved in new things. That's what successful blue chip companies do. That's how they survive in a market where they actually make very little profit from their main product line.

@Singer,

the efficiency of solar cells is one of many limiting factors of using solar cells to charge laptops, recent advances in technology could push solar cell efficiency to 45%; I’m not sure if this is enough to power a laptop, but it’s a lot better than the current average of 15%. Billions of dollars have been spent in developing solar cell technology, I seriously doubt Dell has the expertise to enter a market that will get saturated in a few short years, don’t forget about years of R&D to get up to speed with current cell technology. Dell really needs to focus on their primary business lines, as you may have noticed many Dell sideline products have failed.

Solar Panel integrated into Laptop

Solar cell built into the back of laptops to extend the change or recharge batteries. Currently the backside of a Laptop displays the maker logo. What is need are solar panels integrated in to the systems that will charge or maintain a charge longer.
