State Linux Compatibility of All PCs Preloaded with Windows As Well As All Peripherals.

380 points posted to Linux, Desktops and Laptops by smah 06/04/07

The reason for this is that many Linux users buy Windows PCs with the intention of dual booting to run legacy Windows applications (since there is only a $50 price premium for Windows). Also many companies like mine have a policy of where possible buying only IT equipment that is compatible with both Windows and Linux (to ensure redeployability if required). The result is that we look for good Linux compatibility when buying Windows PCs.

@Smah - you could consider changing the title of this to: "DELL: ONLY offer notebooks, desktops and peripherals certified compatible with BOTH Windows and Linux"

Your reason is an excellent one.

I think that's best left up to the Linux community to do as they have done. Dell isn't going to sell enough Linux pre-installed computers for this to be worth their while (~.5% of the total system sales). And compatibility with Linux comes down to drivers of associated hardware.

Dell would probably suggest that if you were looking to dual boot in the future, simply buy a Linux pre-installed system which is Dell certified to run Linux. And since all PC's sold are Windows compatible, you'll have no problem converting to dual boot in the future. You'll just need to buy a copy of windows.
