Linux Quickbooks - dell and intuit work together for linux version

240 points posted to Linux, Software by hello77 05/20/07

I would love to switch to linux --- but as a small business the lack of a native linux version of quickbooks is my only stumbling block. I realize there are other finanancial packages for linux--- but quickbooks offers me online banking, credit card processing, and mailing of invoices to my clients through the internet (I submit the invoices over the internet - then intuit physically mails the invoice in a envelope to my client). In short, quickbooks offers me a feeling of reliability and ease of use which I am hesitant to part with as my business depends upon it.

I think there maybe many other people in the same boat as I am with regard to lack of being able to run quickbooks in linux. It could also be that not much work need to be done in that intuit already offers a mac version of quickbooks --- and the mac os is based on unix and mostly open source code --- so perhaps only minor modifications need to be done to make it work on linux.

It would seem to me that dell and intuit could work together on this as it could be a great marketing program for both companies.

It's a good thought but wouldn't you have better luck trying to convince Intuit?

I dont know --- thought maybe dell would have more pull with intuit than i would --- this is good place to start as the results of the poll could be taken to intuit to show there is demand (if poll shows such) and dell would be much more credible than me asking on an intuit forum. To me, it also is selling point to dell as it might help sell more linux computers if dell could offer linux quickbooks --- as it maybe stumbling block for a lot of users if proven financial software (that window users are familiar with) is not offered --- thats my feeling on it as it is my only stumbling block to moving to linux--- hope intuit does come out with linux version.

I'm not really sure if this is the right place. Have you had a look at GnuCash?

I have seen gnu cash in my web search of linux financial software ---- seems quite popular ---but am unsure if I want to risk going to gnu cash while also transitioning to linux as have not used before --- perhaps i am a bit unwilling to take the full plunge into linux without at least having my core financial software. it could be my fears are unwarranted --- but dont want to risk all when jumping to linux.

Did not mean to post in wrong place ---- but was trying to say that a linux quickbooks version would assure my next computer would be a dell linux system --- it my only stumbling block

This is a fine idea, and Dell could do it without Intuit's help by
funding the Wine project to fix the bugs that keep current
Quickbooks from running on Wine. (Quickbooks 2004 runs ok
on Crossover, the commercially supported Wine;
it's only newer versions of Quickbooks that have trouble.)

But I'm not sure Quickbooks is the app to single out.
The Linux Application Request Survey run by Novell
last year listed Quickbooks as only #9 in the most
wanted list. Photoshop was #1, by quite a wide margin
(1866 votes vs. 405 votes). You can see the whole list,
and what the Wine project is doing about it, at

Good point that I should of listed more apps here as quickbooks is probably not the only application that some users may want. I hope some work is done to get some type of "packaged" application pack together where it makes easier to transition to linux for the average user. The thing I like about quickbooks vs a lot of the linux financial packages is the online banking, credit card, and the third party mailing of invoices to my customers where I dont have to mail the invoices myself. If linux had something like this in the financial software areat, then I would use it. The wine thing makes a lot of sense also; but it would be nice if software company's like intuit and adobe began having true linux versions as I am really getting sort of tired of all the stuff microsoft is trying to ram down our throat; particularly with vista (sorry if seem like im flaming today; dont mean to but I have had it with vista after todays latest incident which I am not going to go into here. ..
