dell goes retail channel---low perfermance systems?

dell just announced it will start selling computers through resell channel,
that would likely put dell in the store like bestbuy.

in general, retail stores sell lower performance comps than online,
like slower processor , less memory.

i suspect dell would go down this way to compete again hp & acer.

and i dont believe selling more pcs this way equal more profit.

05/18/07		 There have been calls here for Dell to offer a retail presence for those who want 'hands on' before purchasing.

At the same time, I've never been especially happy WITH the retail channel when it comes to PC offerings, especially with regard to the technical knowledge and _honesty_ of the SALES staff.

Now, how could Dell in any way 'influence' the retail channel to match the Apple store's 'geniuses'???

05/18/07		 The submitter questions the margin for such sales... appropriately. But, the 'flip side' is simple VISIBILITY. IF the offerings are seen in a positive light _in_ their market segment and IF they don't generate a greater amount of _scorn_ for their low-end configuration, they can represent 'free advertizing'... simply greater visibility of the Dell name... but it really MUST be a presence seen favorably or it will backfire. Dell certainly doesn't want to be a Packard Bell!

05/30/07		 Most shoppers in retail outlets that are considering purchasing a computer have never experienced high performance. All of the other name brands, not to mention the no-name brands, don't have nearly the prestige factor like telling your friends " I got a Dell". In my mind, this is the traction that'll run 'em over.
