Getting Ubuntu on a Dell

490 points posted to Linux by mikifinaz 05/08/07

@mikifinaz - when we announced on May 1 we'd offer Ubuntu on Dell, we said it would be available in the coming weeks. Please visit www.dell.com/ubuntu in the coming weeks to order a system.

with a little patience. Besides, Dell's new model line up comes out in June.

The Linux laptop model will have 512 RAM a 60Gbyte hard drive, solo Pentium 4 processor, and will weigh 10 pounds. It will be made of gray plastic and have a 2 hour battery. It will be more expensive than all other laptops running windows....am I being pessimistic or close to realistic?

I figured at least one would be black and white with a yellow keyboard.

Sounds like Dell and Microsoft first seem to work out how much Dell will pay Microsoft for each Linux system they sell.

(and I wish I were exaggerating, but that's basically what the Novell/Microsoft-IP-agreement that Dell is now supporting is all about)

does this look like a support forum to you mikifinaz?

No this isn't a support forum, but from years of working in, for and with large companies to get to the guy at the top that makes decisions you have to rattle doors, send emails, phone, shout and use every possible venue to get attention. If I lived near DELL I would picket and call the media on a slow news day to get a DELL computer, pre-loaded with Linux and a recovery disk. This isn't a DELL issue; it's a big company issue and this is just one area I have used to encourage DELL to provide a choice that I want. I am tired of scratch building to get Linux, it should be and easy choice but certain segments of the market are creating artificial blocks to prevent this choice from being offered.

mikifinaz, i ask again, does this look like a support forum to you?

Does it look like a place where you POST QUESTIONS?

Oh, hi, dell ideastorm, umm, i lost my sock. how do i find it?

and you put in your EMAIL? As though Michael Dell is going to see it and EMAIL you? good god.

That's one email addy that's certain to get a torrent of spam.

But what I found to be funny was the notion that one would picket a company to offer something which they are under zero obligation to sell.

Anyway, nothing beats a failure like a try. That said, I think I'll picket the new walmart to sell porn. And kirsch filled chocolates. Oh, and what the hell, sex toys. After all, they shouldn't artificially present a barrier for consumer choice.

WalMart does indeed pay attention to customer demand, and does indeed sell sex toys in markets where there's support for them. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/18/91511/4824
Wal-Mart Canada and Shoppers will carry a line of sex products called Elexa, developed by Trojan.
Now I'm not sure which point you're trying to make. Are you saying local demand for a product line with a relatively small following (compared to the other they sell) can even influence a company as big as walmart - why does it take Dell so long?

Look @ mikifinaz's post somewhere in the middle.

The point and the sarcasm is directed at the notion of artifical barriers.

Oh, and you're attempt to make a counter point is way off the mark. I want porn, sex toys, and alcohol filled chocolates sold at my local Walmart. I couldn't give a rat's arse about what's sold in Canada. I DEMAND it be sold here in Neo-Puritanical AMERICA!!!

!!!!

LOL.

I've got my tie-die, sandals, and picket sign at the ready! Who's with me?

Drifting back on topic - perhaps Dell should sell a computer pre-loaded with porn. There are lots of porn sites that would pay to get free trials of their content pre-loaded in the same way that the crapware is pre-loaded; and many people would probably find porn less offensive than McAfee, RealPlayer, and MS Works. :-) If Dell offered it as an option to help subsidize the PC (get a discount if porn vendors pre-load free trials) I could see man people ordering it.

@dell_admin2, you must remove the (at)DUPLICATEOF keyword when you merge posts, otherwise the merged article is still flagged....

@shooters - thanks for the heads up... we were moving fast through the merging and overlooked that important point. :)
