Gouging on laptop ram

30 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by tleavit 05/04/07

This is a rant,

Up until 3 months ago, a top of the line Dell latitude that we bought with 2 gigs of ram cost about $1700. On the web site, if I altered the config to 4 gigs of RAM, dell *ADDED* $1700 to the price ($3400). I have to admit that this was one of the most ridiculous charges I have ever see. Switching from 2 X 1gig chips to 2 X 2 gig chips cost *more* then the entire laptop.

In the past few months the price has dropped to a whopping

I have seen aftermarket chips as low as $200+ each. There’s absolutely no reason to change more than $250 extra to go from 2 gigs to 4 gigs of

Need more RAM slots to install more lower capacity and cheaper RAM.

tleavit,

Dell is not gouging your RAM prices, at all.

You see, Dells innovative equal opportunity employment policies are very strict,
and Dell has hired many small fairies to install RAM without opening the case.

Now, you may already know that Fairies are all full Union members, and a force not to be tested.
Afterall, they could fly up your nose and do terrible things to your brain if you opposed them!

So the Fairy Union National 10101 (F.U.N.) will not bow to pressure - Dell must continue to pay outrageous benefits,
full health care (very expensive for fairies - the tiny pills are so very hard to make!), tuition assistance, etc. etc.

Dell actually must lose a substantial amount of money with each RAM upgrade you buy.

So please, do not buy too many RAM upgrades - DELL can not afford it!

Perhaps its time to switch to an open os. Most of my computers at home are over 6 years old running less than 512 mg of ram. When I boot into xp they suck, when I boot freebsd or pc-bsd, or linux they run just fine.
