Dell Ubuntu for Europe

22500 points posted to Linux by yesmathew 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell announced to pre-load Ubuntu on Notebooks and Desktops for US market. What about for Europe? We want for Europe market too... users from Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Austria, Spain, and others are requesting the same.

See the blog post in Direct2Dell re: Ubuntu in UK, France and Germany; Dell/Red Hat Solutions & More.

This website is a great tool, but indeed it needs some updates, like :
=> Ability to mark an idea as duplicate
=> Ability to delete an idea (outdated, duplicate or irrevelant)

As for now, it is our task to highlight the most important ideas by gathering the vote of the duplicate ideas in the most-rated duplicate...

A lot of great developers and contributers come from Europe. Especially in the Ubuntu distros.

ergo's comment is similar to my posts on the subject:

Please vote for them as well, if you agree! The ability to delete your own posts is not something I thought of. Good thought, ergo, but it does bring up some concerns. What happens if a user deletes a post that had a lot of votes? Just because you are the originator of an idea doesn't mean you should be able to delete it if the discussion takes a turn you don't like. It would be great to delete a post you submitted by accident, before it acquired too many votes, and it would be great if the system archived in a separate listing posts that remain below a certain threshold for a set period of time (say 2 weeks). Those posts would not show in the main listings any longer.

The OEMs are the only ones with enough power to pressure the chip vendors to release their documentation!

Vendors: we don't want your source code and we don't want NDAs. All we want is the complete documentation of your hardware so we can build our own stable and maintainable opensource drivers!

If Dell wants to let its customers satisfied with its new Linux PCs offering, it MUST make vendors provide full and free (both in the sense of freedom - i.e. not under NDA - and in the sense of price) documentation. The rest (hardware support and opensource drivers) will come along.

Cast your vote for free hardware documentation! Dell's Linux PCs offering will be completely useless without proper hardware support...

I voted on the other thread... I really want a Linux laptop in Argentina. It's pretty easy to find a desktop computer with a CrapDistro installed, but there's no way to get a Linux laptop.

I have posted a similar comment for the World-wide distribution thread, but this thread specific to Europe is important too. Many high-tech products and services are tested first in Europe (esp. Iceland, Finland, Sweden, etc) due to a high penetration rate. EC significantly supports FLOSS, and when it comes to Linux, please think where it was born. The Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

C'mon Dell - do it! We use far more open-source software in Europe and the market here is bigger than in the US. Sell us the laptops we want!!!!!!!

Incidently, why on Earth would people demote this request?? How stupid. You don't have to buy a linux computer you know!

How long do we have to wait?... Europe is a much better launch pad than the US for Ubuntu laptops due to the move by governments already to open source options. How can you have not noticed this?!

Having Ubuntu preinstalled on a Dell system would make it easier for me to recommend such a system to relatives. I could be reasonably sure that the system components are supported and could give some additional support, which would be useful for them.

Michael Dell, you are the founder and chairman of one of the worlds largest PC manufactures. If Dell intends to remain a "True" globlal player and retain its market position, it needs to listen to all its customers, not just those in the US.

Be a true global player, start behaving like one and give the rest of the world the opportunity to run a great OS (Ubuntu) on great PC (Dell)

There are by far too much Linux preinstallation ideas here. Currently, there are TWO ideas for Linux preinstallation on the home page that say essentially the SAME thing! And indeed, you duplicated ergo's idea more or less -- you posted you idea on May 3, but ergo submitted his/hers on May 2. How about ideas about Windows, like offering Vista Ultimate on all PCs (not just XPS)?

I've always used Ubuntu/Linux for all my works at school. My biggest problem i found was the driver support in linux.
I hate Windows Vista and its stability problems, linux has everything you need, and you can always have multiple operating systems inside linux.

I vote for Linux!

I look forward for Dell introducing Ubuntu 100% compiant laptops in Europe!!!
I would be the first to buy it since I'm currently looking for a laptop that doesn't make me crazy in istalling drivers. I was thinking take advantage from a trip in USA for bying those, but I'm looking more for a small business laptop rather than a consumer one.
Hope to see those soon here in EU.
Thanks!!

Do Dell make fun of European Linux users?

Inspiron 6400n and Inspiron 530n are are old PCs with old configurations
But you are selling them at a high price.

Are you trying to palm off worthless PCs on us ?
The US Dell website not sell these models anymore....

I was ready to buy one laptop but i am very disappointed.

The Ubuntu-Dell is of course most needed/appreciated in countries where Linux is popular. According to The Linux Counter (counter.li.org), the 11 countries with the highest Linux density is: Andorra, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Estonia, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, Luxembourg and Poland. All of them are in Europe. Germany is 31 on the list, France and UK further down. (The list changes over time.) Although Germany, France and UK may be an economically good start for Dell, it is definately not enough to meet the needs!

For example: We norwegians need a Danish/Norwegian keyboard in order to write Danish/Norwegian characters, so it is not trivial to buy a computer from another country.
So please Dell:
Let me buy an Ubuntu-Dell in Norway!

Dell admins, Its not that I cannot install Ubuntu of my own. Because I want to reward you for choosing Ubuntu to preinstall on Dell computers. Now I am looking for Ubuntu notebooks with international (QWERTY) keyboards in Switzerland. Will this be a dream for me? or should I look for an Apple notebook?

More reason why we need Ubuntu linux in Switzerland, Europe...

9000 computers in Geneva, Swiss schools have been dual-booting Windows and and Ubuntu for some time now in anticipation of guidelines from the Switzerland’s Department of Public Instruction, whose motto is “Long Live Free Software.” The Tribune de Geneve featured a story on Friday about the elimination of dual boot capabilities in all of these machines and a migration exclusively to Linux (the original story is available here in French or here in English courtesy of Google’s language tools).
