Illuminated Dell Bezel on Notebooks

110 points posted to Laptops by sean_p_tweedy 05/02/07

I've often considered my Dell notebook somewhat of a status symbol and feel proud when I am using it. I would love for more people to be able to enjoy the quality of Dell computers and thought that if the front of the laptop stood out a bit more than people would recognize it and want one too.

Here is my idea:

A backlight behind a semi transparent dell bezel on the front of the laptop behind the display. A multiple led backlight that can chance color (similar to what is on the xps 1710) would be really cool too.

I'd rather save my battery than have another piece that could break.

You dont need to use additional battery life if the bezel shares the same backlight that the LCD uses. Plus led's use very little energy, especially the newer ones. As far as durability goes, all Dell laptops go through extensive testing which is why they are one of the most rugged laptops made.

As far as breakage goes, that has nothing to do with this post, this post concerns iteslf with whether or not an illuminated bezel would be a good idea, not whether it would break. Please post those comments in the appropriate forum.

If you use the same light as the screen you loose brightness on your screen in the same area as the bezel. If you make the color changable wouldn't it change the color of your screen also? If they want to make the option available, thats one thing but if it is standard I'm really against it.

Coudl just use a cut out like the Apple notebooks. That's the backlight shining through the cutout illuminating it's silouette logo.

As someone already mentioned apple notebooks have this, and if youve ever used such a system outside on a sunny day youll see why it was such a terrible idea. Ive seen many apple owners cover it with a sticker or tape or something.

No thank you.

Last time I saw bright sun on my laptop screen, I couldn't read it. Looked pretty much black, never mind the logo cutout. The older iPod and Palm OS PDA can be read in the sunlight, but the but the new color screen iPods and Palm OS PDAs are unreadable outside. I can't remember seeing in person someone use a laptop outside in the sun.

I use my inspiron in direct sunlight all the time, you just make sure the sun is at the screens back & it works okay. Dont get me wrong its not ideal, but it is useable. The ironic part is that apart from the backward apple sillouette of sunlight shining through, the apple screens are the best in the business for reading in bright conditions.
