Two Headphone Jacks

290 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by greygabe 04/27/07

Is there any reason not to put two headphone jacks on all consumer based laptops (Inspiron and XPS)? It is a very inexpensive item and takes up little to no room on the system. How often are laptop owners on a plane, on a road trip, or whatever and watching a movie with a friend? The headphone splitters work but why not just put it on the laptop? Hp does it...

This does not sound like a very compelling need to me. Most of the time not even one headphone jack is in use.

Using the same logic, why not double all of your connectors on the laptop while you are at it?

Actually, if you want to add an additional jack, I would vote for restoring the stereo input for those of us who would like to use our laptop to record in stereo.

I don't see your logic nelson. The only other port used nearly as often is USB, and there is always more than one of those. If you travel at all with friends or even business partners, it would come in handy. It also comes in handy for many students, whether its them listening to music and sharing it when they shouldn't or working on a presentation/flash in a group. Personally I not only do both of those, but also watch movies on road trips and use my headphone splitter. I also find it benificial when LANing if someone wants to watch over my shoulder. And if you want to start a new post about recording in stero, be my guest. I think its just alright. I have an Alienware (going to get the XPS1510 once it's invented) and I already have stereo recording.

I guess that I don't have as many friends as you do ;-)

They sell a jack splitter at Radio Shack for this.

I have three ears and need as many jacks as I can get.

actually I have two jacks on one of my laptops and I still have no idea why...there must be some good reason, better than plugging to sets of headphones in on the rare chance you share your computer with someone on a plane. I am sure it can be used for other things like holding a toothpick or something.....
