Munich buys Windows 2000 used licenses
2 Jan 2007

The German city of Munich is buying a whole pile of Microsoft Windows this month - but it won't be the newly released Windows Vista. Instead, it will buy 2000 legit "used licenses" of Windows 2000 Professional, claiming it will save them money.

Second hand licenses are growing in popularity. In the UK, sales of second-hand Microsoft software licences are, apparently, doubling month-on-month.

That's not surprising: for instance, 218 licenses of Windows Office XP will cost €70,000 (£47,000) in Germany, but when used, the price drops to €32,000.
Yes, that was 2007; and yes that was Windows 2000. Windows 2000 if perfectly adequate for many user's needs; and at less than half price it's pretty appealing.

This will also be useful after Microsoft stops letting Dell ship new copies of XP. Selling used copies of XP could let Dell continue to fill the demand after Microsoft stops OEMs from selling new ones later this year.

In addition to reselling them, they might want to let Dell customers donate their no-longer-used Windows2000 and NT and Vista versions back to Dell to seed this marketplace.

Workplaces standardized on XP would probably be happy to donate any Vistas Dell sent them; and I'd be happy to donate whatever Windows versions Dell sent me in the past.

If Dell gets these through donations, this should be great for Dell's bottom line because there'd be no cost for them for the software.

I'm curious why people are demoting this.
It seems to help Dell (more profit per OS since they get them more cheaply).
It seems to help customers (save money)
Noone seems to mind recycling other components. Why not recycling software.

Wow, just got re-referenced to this on a separate idea, I have a cabinet full of these! In the original wrapper!

jorge: If only you had voted it up, perhaps Dell would jump on the idea and you could sell that cabinet back to them.

Well sometimes you don't see the light till later, what can I say, I did vote up the idea to be able to change your vote though.

Cool. I was thinking you wanted to keep Dell out of the market to strengthen your monopoly position as a Win2K cabinet vendor. :)

Yea, I need to realize the potential in that cabinet someday!

I don't know why people would demote this? Cheaper Windows can only be better for people who need Windows.
