Now You Choose - Concept 2

7700 points posted to Gaming, XPS products by dell_admin1 04/25/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Decide” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Check out the latest Idea in Action on the new XPS 730.

Reason? I love the 'X' Typeface of the XPS. AND would love to know what Font Face it is and if it is available to download. :)

@dell_admin1: Any info about the Typeface/Fontface name and/or where it can be downloaded/viewed will be great. Or is it Proprietary?

I agree, nice design, but move it up closer to the center of the panel.

Or, leave the design as is and add aonther clear panel like the lower one and place it above the X.

What about the silver color for the XPS 700? Would a similar side panel be availible in different colors?

04/25/07
This design is superior to the first choice. The X keeps with the theme of XPS and isn't just another clear window. It has design, purpose and XPS family heritage. I assume it is situated low because no one wants to look at the power supply? Overall, nice work guys. Now....i just want to see what my next M1710 is gonna look like....
reg
04/25/07
Actually I would make the bottom window mirrored to the top,
so the only 'metal' would be the X.

The bottom window, the X window lines, and then the top window.
Symmetrical design with Maximum case viewing.

Add in more Red light while you are at it,
and the fans should be Red Lit black fans too.

Even have functional red lights - each slot with a card in it, lights up another Red LED when it is powered...
RED under-case lighting. spills a little red light from under the feet of the case.

RED and BLACK - Nice color combo, a classic.

Very futuristic design. It will appeal to a number of gamers.

I agree with the earlier comment to add a window above the X as well. I would very much like a windowed side panel - and I think many people would want to get the upgrade.

I like this design better, primarily because of the X. I cant tell, however you may want to have various color lights for behind the clear screen. For the most part the inside isnt too busy, but adding a little light might help add to give it a better cool factor.

Absolutely awesome. I've always liked the way Dell does the 'X' on the XPS systems and I'm glad to see it incorporated on the 710. I'm looking at buying a 710 or whatever the new system is at the end of summer and I hope it has this on it. Also, please don't limit this design to the H2C only. I'd like to see it on all the 710 models.
grondinm
04/27/07
i love this concept. A few things i would like to see changed or added to this system is firstly a actual reset button so you don't have to help down that hard to press power button if something goes horibly wrong. And also like the idea i suggested have the post (1,2,3,4) ;ights act as external drive/cd-rom activity lights with the possible option to select wich drives activity they show or monitor. and also for the ones of us who already have an XPS system would it be possible to have the side panel shipped to us at minimal or no cost?
delltech
04/27/07
I would like to see the full XPS spelled out on the side, but if it has to be this exact design, it is much better than the plain cutout window on the other model. Also, I agree with the other comments, if you just go with the X, it needs a bar at the top as well. Sure the top of the system isn't all that exciting to see, but I like symmetry.

This is preferable to a simple square window.

There must be an even better design that is more dramatic and more symmetrical.

All Dell computers should be housed in more dramatic cases. And by dramatic, it should look like the powerful computer that it is, rather than something silly with fins.

Here is a concept. Why don't you move toward SFF (Small From Factor) chassis's like Shuttle and Asus have done. Why do we have a 80LB system that has the same performance as a SFF unit. The SFF is light weight, portable, upgradeable, and quite. Hmmm - what an idea!

Really like the new design concept. I agree with many of the others about having another window on top as well, it would help balance out the design more. I would like to ask though, will users be able to change the colors of the LEDs through the BIOS, like some of the ealier versions of the XPS line? When will the new concept designs be available for consumers?

I like the idea of being able to see through the computer case. Although several companies already have this option, it would be a great step for Dell in making a gaming computer. I know I would buy one if Dell relesed an XPS with this case. The thing that I like the most out of the two designs, and the reason I chose this one, is for the large X on the side of the case. It just looks really cool.

Is it possible to move past this ugly as hell XPS design to something that doesn't look like quite as crappy. You bought alienware, use their IP. Maybe take a note from Apple, make the case be a bit functional. Every pure gaming PC I have had was DIY, for a blend of features and apperance. Take that solid state drive your going to be providing in Laptops and integrate it here, as well.
eskie227
05/02/07
I agree that this is nicer than the square window. It looks like a little more thought went into it than simply cutting out a square. But, have you thought about getting away from the black, and doing this in a nice, brushed aluminum? It would give you the look of being carved out of a solid block of metal, with more depth in its appearance, and generate a desire to touch the case, just to see what it's like. I think you would need to be sure that the window side is fairly thick, so it lends a 3 dimensional feel to it, rather than simple plain, thin aluminum duct-like panels. While the black may be striking at first glance, over time (unless you keep it in a very light colored room, it just blends into the background. A brushed reflective surface, with nicely machined cutouts, would stand out in any setting, and keep your attention focused on it longer.

Very cool! I work at Dell, but don't get to see these concept designs. I thought my Gen1 was cool back when I got it, but this one is awesome. I agree with transit60, add a matching window to the top of the X, or maybe remove the bottom window and enlarge the X to encompass most of the side panel. I dont need to see the power supply or hard drives, but the liquid coolling, fans and gfx cards are a must!

05/02/07
Frankly, I don't particularly like either. All those lights may fit in a teenager's bedroom, but, in my opinion, any adult person with some sense of aesthetics prefers the elegant European "Bauhaus" look. Dell, haven't you learned what a cool design means? Just look at Apple.
hjwasson
05/02/07
jurena, this is not meant to be primarily for a living room entertainment center, most business environments, etc. It is meant primarily for exaclty those teenagers (if they had money) or us boys who never grew up (and refuse to do so). The entire XPS line is primarily meant for performance demanding nerds such as myself, and they are meant to be flashy...although the XPS M2010 is down-right classy and understated...except for it's sheer size! That machine could belong on a CEO's desktop or in a living room.

The design of this mini-tower chassis strikes a chord with us, as you can see by the votes. dell_admin1, I (and guardianxps & lucid) would like it even more if those LED's where user-selectable in color, like on the XPS M1710. And of course able to be turned off, for when you need stealth.
chewd
05/02/07
Put me in the "doesnt like either one" category too. Is the shape of the window the only difference?

But then i dont really fit into the demographic that these would be marketed to. Any case with lights is a instant deal killer with me, as my main gaming rig goes in my bedroom and never gets shut off. Thats all i need is a bunch of silly LEDs keeping me up all night. Ive never been a fan of the "cover up the optical drives with flashy bezels" either as I always seem to find the exact drive that wont line up properly with the buttons & whatnot.

Take away the lights, the window, the drive bezels, make it beige and add a spot for a floppy drive & youll have the kind of case i look for. LOL
hjwasson
05/02/07
LOL, chewd! You most definitely are not the demographic the XPS 710 is designed for! Since all of the boutique ultra-high performance PC's I can think of are flashy (or at least most certainly not beige boxes) - you'd probably be better off building your own system if you want a totally stealthed ultra-high performance system.

05/03/07
option 2 clearly the best. i'd hope that dell would also offer this same case but with blue lights instead of just red. it would also be nice if they also offered the same case design but with a black/silver theme; but more led options preferred.
badblood
05/03/07
I am with Chewd on this one...looks like the old one with windows. Looks hellishly noisy with all those vents, jets for fans...
hjwasson
05/03/07
Actually, BTX case designs are by nature far quieter than older ATX designs - having larger fans that spin more slowly but move more air. The noise in this performance setup would be from the cooling fans on the GPU(s), unless you went with water cooling - then it'd be a matter of how noticeable the pump noise was.

The largest noise source in my gaming system at home now (water cooled CPU & two GPU's) is the DVD drive. I can't believe how noisy they are when spinning at max rotation. I've heard that some Samsung models now have FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearings) as well as self-balancing to reduce noise. I hope the rest of the industry follows along soon!

I do like the "X" design on the panel. It gives the case a classy look. The other case is just too plain for my taste.

05/04/07
both concept cases are ok but where do you get your designers from Detroit? Blocky, uninspiring, no fun. Open up a pc magazine and take a look at whats out there. Some pretty cool designs. Dell used to be tops in field because you built the best machines and I loved directing friends of mine to buy Dell. But Over the last 5-7 years Dell quality, tech support ie talking to someone whom you can barely understand, and ease of use of your ordering website, coupled with all of the free trial software and other preloaded crap that comes on a system and slows it performance to a crawl, I and many other techies I know, no longer recommend Dell. You have lost touch with the people. Take a look at apple designs, get a little more contemporary, hire some young dudes. And for Gods sake and Dells, let Americans speak to tech support people who speak real english, how about a opt in $10 fee for american or atleast north american tech support?????

come on Dell, some of these are No Brainers
sid
05/04/07
Raptorman, I'd agree that this design isn't as unique as say, Alienware or VooDoo, but to say it looks like a Detroit design, blocky and uninspiring? What are you talking about? I haven't seen a car that looks like a Dell XPS 720. And last I looked, car designs out of Tokyo are taking the same blockly look as well. Then you rant on about tech support and quality? What is it... the design or the tech support. Please... keep those rants out of here and stick to the design.

I hate to have to go to the back of the machine to plug things in and out. Some plugs, like power, printer, and monitor, I don't change often enough so I would not mind having in the back. However, there should be a way of connecting more than one printer. On the side or front, I would like a button to change printer, and to plug in headsets, and mouse and keyboard, and USB, etc. These can be nicely organized so a door can close over the plugs, and wires are guided out of view, since I imagine most people want the wires out of view (most people keep the wire mess behind! and never go back to look!).

I've read most of comments posted here and the other models, and I don't see any information that includes suggestions made with regards to operating systems, and software, etc. Dell should become more involved in OS's and software.

05/10/07
Why just an 'X'? Make it a transparent X - P - S. It would look more stylish with the actual XPS branding rather than just a simple 'X' without any significance. Do not focus any light on the fan within the chassis as the "ON-OFF" effect from the reflected light would be harsh on the eyes especially in a dark room.

ISN'T THIS BETTER?
hjwasson
05/10/07
XPS is clearly painted on the bottom left of the panel - a clear tie-in to the X in the window. It might get too cluttered with the full XPS in window. The lights should stay, but be user controllable, just like on the current XPS M1710. Users can turn them on or off, have them pulse, or change the color. Different areas are controlled independently - you could leave the interior chassis lights on and the panel lights off, or vice versa.

Can this be modified to a slim tower?, slim 'n' catchy, a more space saving and elegant one?
hjwasson
05/12/07
I believe this is a proposed aesthetic modification to an existing model (the current XPS 710), and not a complete redesign - so we won't see major changes to the system, like a slimmer chassis design. Slim tower designs, while elegant, present design problems. You have to then start looking at either using 90 degree daughter cards for your add-on cards, or else only allow half-height cards. You have to turn your 5.25" drive bays sideways, etc. There would be less volume in the case, and less airflow (unless more powerful & louder chassis fans were used). Since the XPS 710 is a high-performance system - I don't see Dell changing the design to one that would restrict the components that could go into it.
petzymathuram
05/12/07
hjwasson,

Yeah, I had this doubt because the case volume can be increased vertically for more air flow. Anyways thanks a lot for the information.

I'd have to vote for Concept 1 personally:
a) The X blocks the view of the "XPS logo" inside the chassis
b) Concept 1 DOESN'T contain the XPS logo on the outside chassis, but rather inside [very nice touch in my opinion]
c) When I see this logo and those red lights, the first thing that comes to mind is heart/blood. It feels as if I'm cloning humans, it makes me feel "powerful"
d) If the chassis says XPS, the inside says XPS, and part of this logo is on the window, it kinda feels like a run on sentence

True, man you missed alot here. Short version
- cosh's catagorizer keeps getting better
- shooters flipped his lid trying to get dell_admin1 to merge ideas and got run off
- there is a dell_admin2 now
- I posted a nice poem(deleted it shortly after
- we all put up alot of our ideas for deletion in the new "delete requests" catagory
- thebittersea's ideastorm troopers post became a general chat area
- I suggested we use live spaces or myspace for user profiles and link them to the site, everyone hated it, my link is up on the storm trooper post
- I think the updates are coming tomorrow, look at the direct 2 dell site they posted last friday that ideas about customer service will be posted here for feedback
- Dell is broadening it's sales model
- I'm getting along with jorge

I think that is about it. Nice to have you back, sorry to everyone else for messing up this post, but maybe you learned something you didn't know in the process.
