Make Laptops more Durable & Water Resistant

610 points posted to Laptops by jrhoesly 04/23/07

Dell need to make all of their laptops more resistant to fluids and accidental spills. (keyboard, ports, etc.) Dell should really come out with a line of extremely ruggedized and high performance laptops and tablet pc's to complete with the Panasonic Toughbook.

I think, a bit less rugged than the toughbook (but still rugged enough for outdoor use under mediocre weather conditions, lying in the hot car, falling from table height, normal dirt, dust and pollen, maybe even for the swimming pool) would be only slightly more expensive than a normal laptop.
Condition for that would be though, that the laptop doesn't need ventilation, which means low energy components and therefore no top performance.

if it wasn't for the aluminium case on my PDA I would have killed it so many times! My laptop is heavy and expensive and the fear of not dropping it is not enough... a robust design goes a long way for all laptops - I had a fujitsu a while back and that thing was bullet proof! (finally killed it by dropping it on the screen edge so it wrecked the hinge to the display - still worked but flickered for about 6months before alas my baby was gone....) survived drops from the car, the desk, spills from coffee and pop, even survived the ocassional rainy day....

Please certify some laptops at IP 67 class according to IEC 60529 standard. Adding water and dust protection will be useful only if done following standards. Many mobile phones, PDA, transceivers, GPS receivers already do this. Why laptop shouldn't do the same?
