Special parts for disabled people

270 points posted to Healthcare by mauricio_martins 04/22/07

Dell should provide parts specific for disabled people. Such braile keyboards for the blind (http://www.sighted.com/english/braillein.html) interface for severily injured people (tetraplegic, quadriplegic, armless..) (http://www.sforh.com/pointing/mindmouse-head.html) or promote research among the great centres or schools to offer several kind of equipments that could allow the usage of computers as theirs "body" extensions.

I know this could not give great profits to the company, but as far as I know, this put Dell strongly ahead of any other company as the company that "Everyone matters".

What I want to know is why everything for the blind is so expensive! I've used almost every kind of braille peripheral to make computing easier, and text-to-speech, Kurzweil book readers, magnifiers, and the prices are just insane. I think Dell could do it, but it'd still be too expensive for the average consumer.

That's the goal to promote research. How dim the costs on such items? Why blind/disabled people should pay a truck to get a simple thing? Researches can bring new materials, new technologies. Remember, these things could make no sense for us, normal people because hopefully we will not need to use them, but for those ones can change their lives completely.

Does the government or health insurance help pay for these items? If they do, it would explain why they are expensive, just like medicine they know you need it so they jack up the price.

At least in Texas, the state pays for the stuff and loans it out to people who need it for school, home, work, etc.

Good thought. Dell should help with the research and development in this field. It will be worth the effort.

When a good initiative for disabled people is under consideration or under discussion, it will always be better to consult with the disabled..get a word of thought from them as well so that their requirements can be better understood.
Consider them for the discussion
