download it yourself. Why on earth do you think Dell should do anything for you regarding software. They make the boxes and the bits inside - well at least, they buy the parts from China and stick them together somewhere in China, ship them to the USA and Americans buy them and think they are American, that the money stays in America. Well it does that, in Mr Dell's account.
All that would be required is for Dell to update its software configuration program for XP. There is nothing more frustrating for the customer who has purchased a new computer than to discover that either the hardware or software is not up to date. IMO, there is no excuse for this.
This is especially important because of how Microsoft handles security updates.
Companies that keep their hardware and software configurations up to date, will end up being the real winners in terms of market share. I have a number of friends, who have worked as systems analysts or tech managers and have used PCs since they became available. One friend just bought two new top of the line Mac Pro laptops and she is very excited. Because OS X is built on UNIX, it is far more secure. They are currently running XP in Parallels and she has been amazed at how fast XP now loads. There is also the added benefit that she can drop out of Parallels and write Perl code.
The Mac hardware configuration is constantly kept up to date. Her husband is a professional photographer and the Mac platform offers substantial benefits for him as a photographer.
Lenovo is another vendor, which keeps their hardware and software configurations up to date. Dell needs to do this from a purely competitive basis.
IMO, it is really significant when computer professionals are moving away from the standard PC platform. Ordinary consumers are also making similar decisions primarily because everyone is so tired of all of the security issues and how much time they have had to spend on this.
Right now, this is just a trickle of customers, who are moving away from the PC. This is also why Dell needs to move away from putting all of the junkware on a new computer. Dell should build partnerships with the best vendors for specific applications and make it easy for customers to choose those products. When Dell pushes McAfee and Norton, just because it puts lots of money in their pocket does not sit well with most customers.
It is time for Dell to take the high road and to deliver top quality in every respect.
Dell is a Texas company and I know what a great company that they have been in the past and I would like to see Dell return to its top-of-the-line roots.
IE7 can be MORE than a pain... it's too incompatible with existing applications to be safe for many businesses.
FF is definitely a better choice... and should be the default browser of anyone with any sense whatsoever. All my Windows-using friends and associates have installed it and LOVE it.
