ubuntu on my computer: open source for education

7070 points posted to Education, Linux by raymako 03/23/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I am a french teacher working in the south of France .The school's computers are Dell and Nec computers.
Like most of my colleagues, I am using "opensource" (free) softwares, and specially Ubuntu for 2 years.
It works perfectly and the pupils who tried Ubuntu like it very much. I hope it will be possible to buy a Dell computer without Windows very soon and I hope that all the Dell computers of my school will use Ubuntu.
Not only because Ubuntu is free (even if it's not insignificant in a french school...) , but because working with Ubuntu forces you to understand and to think how and why you are using your (Dell) computer.
I know that I'm speaking and writing english language like a spanish cow, so I'm sorry.
I just want to finish my message with this: please be the first big computer manufacturer offering Ubuntu or Windows (which is very performant, but not the only one and specially at school) .

Open Source for Better Education

Do we want democracy to SURVIVE in the U.S.? Do we want our children to have all the tools necessary to keep the U.S. VITAL? Learning Windows teaches you nothing. Not one useful principle.

Learning Linux and OSS teaches FUNDAMENTALS... and Open Source is analogous to OPEN INFORMATION... exactly what a Democracy demands for its very existence! DELL: Support Open Source in Education, for our nation, our children, and our future.

Sun Microsystems chair touts open-source education for K-12 kids
Associated Press
Article Launched: 04/16/2007 03:31:27 PM PDT

SAN JOSE - Since Sun Microsystems Inc. co-founder Scott McNealy stepped down as CEO to focus on his chairmanship full-time, he's been spearheading a side project to transform education the way digital music upended the recording industry.

Though it's not part of his official duties at Santa Clara-based Sun, McNealy is spending a lot of time as pitchman for a project called Curriki - short for curriculum and wiki, which is a Web site allowing users to add and modify content and claim a piece of authorship.

In the case of Curriki, parents, teachers and students can post and download free lesson plans, sample tests, book chapters and other materials. McNealy said the site has strict copyright protections, requiring intellectual property releases for all the original material it publishes.

He said the idea is to lower the barrier to basic educational materials as more students get access to the Internet worldwide.

McNealy said he is particularly concerned about developing countries where network infrastructure is sparse, and is encouraging local governments to boost network spending and adopt Curriki's open-source education model.

That's why he chose China to launch the second phase of the site this week. McNealy is keynoting a Sun education conference Wednesday in Beijing, where he will announce added features to the site, www.curriki.org, including the ability to create personalized pages and a function allowing users to upload and

Tip of the Trade: Edubuntu

http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/3682596<" When you need to set up a computer lab, classroom or meeting room in a hurry, look no further than Edubuntu, "Linux for Young Human Beings." Every individual Class of 200x of each school district should be forced to write their own schools software,
then all they get is what they make.

Do they want internet? They better write a good TCP/IP stack and driver for the network card...

GREAT NEWS: Because of the 'no child left behind' law - the lowest performing students are being shuffled into the highest performing school - mostly juvenile offenders - so now the bright kids can be pulled down to their level, and school crime can increase. 'No Child Left Unbinded'

Open source invading Australian education

http://www.linuxworld.com/news/2007/071607-open-source-invading-australian.html< sparked your interest in open source technologies?

My son. I was doing my PhD in between 1998 and 2002, and as part of the research that I was doing, I happened to come across the expected prices for the Microsoft licences for the school sector as a forward estimate, in the budget papers for the Victorian government. The amount of money surprised and shocked me. "

Edubuntu

I am a teacher who has been using Linux in the classroom for the past ten years.

Currently my favorite educational distribution is Edubuntu. It is so stable, easy to use (my small children use it) and offers hundreds of applications that are wonderful for educational use.

I would like to see Dell offer Edubuntu to schools.

This isn't something that Dell should do on it's own. It should perhaps partner with an organisation that can provide support for Linux in education (perhaps Canonical) and provide a maintained distro for that. Dell would then simply do custom preloads with school orders and supply CDROMs for re-installation.

I'm on my town's Technology Committee, which will be deciding what technology gets used in the schools for the next 3-5 years, and I'm pushing for Ubuntu/Edubuntu. They are worried about getting support however. Being able to see companies like Dell putting Linux in the mainstream will definitely help, as well as Canonical's support contracts.

Hi,

I would like to propose that Dell will sell Ubuntu's computers but oriented to the school's market. Use Ubuntu to give opportunity to the poor childs around the world to learn and use computer with Ubuntu Operating System. Like another initiatives, but in this case use Ubuntu to reach a lot of people.

Dell will sell computer with the characteristics and functionalities to the school market and specially to the poor's child.

Ubuntu comes in the EDUBUNTU version for schools and there are versions for others like governments.
We took a Dell Server that would often use Red Hat as the OS and loaded Edubuntu instead. We tested the EDUBUNTU and found that it pretty much could replace the Win2K and worked well with the APPLES and WIN XP desktops with WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT files readable. There's an additional bonus of the terminal services built in to control Web browsing and offer up applications from a central location. To enable Compatibility with the 2007 and 2009 MS OFFICE versions we are recommending that the files be stored with one copy using the open source formats which the new OFFICE versions support. We are looking at the Ubuntu Dell machines as terminal clients instead of desktops.

Explain the "production concerns" your sales reps are talking about regarding Linux systems.

In a comment in another IdeaStorm thread someone writes
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/67976
Here's what my Dell Higher Ed rep had to say when I tried to order a Dell E520n with Ubuntu:

"After much research, I determined that the Ubuntu versions are not available to higher ed customers for several reasons. As new units, we are not yet able to determine if Canonical can provide the support. Plus, there are production concerns. They are only available to U.S. consumers which means that you would not be able to purchase through the [sic] tax exempt customer number."

Idea 1: We're curious what the production concerns are? Can you tell us in case we should be concerned about the production quality of non-higher-ed ubuntu systems? Or is it something minor like a shortage of stickers that don't say Vista?

Idea 2: Ask Canonical if they can provide the support?

Support Edubuntu for cheap kids/Teen PCs (maybe even school)!

Edubuntu is great for kids and Teens! It is great for school, kids games, and more! It also includes gaim *aka* Pidgen messenger!

A great way Dell could sell edubuntu is by making a clone of ASUS EEE . in Desktop version it could be able to connect to a TV so little kids and teens dont require a monitor!

Thank You,
