Donate old hardware

190 points posted to Environment by kayser 03/14/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Get back the old systems, replaced in enterprises by hundreds sometimes, to life donating them to associations non gubernamentals or dedicated to social action, maybe they can't run the newer applications but they're so capable to navigate internet, work with e-mail and office applications. It also reduces the electronic waste in our planet as the University of United Nations request.

So when you give the new systems you can receipt the old computers to redistribute among all needys.
Dell offers customers a Global Recycling and donation option for their old systems.

The older units can run Linux though. That's one of the advantages of Linux.

Anyway, splendid idea.

I checked at the eco depot here too if I can scavenge parts from the bins & ... no. They let you scavenge paint, but not computer parts - go figure. I build computers out of old parts I collect for people who can't affort newer ones, so why would the eco stations not let me check what's usable and take it free?

THe customers of Dell can duse the Dell Asset Recovery service to donate those computer to a cause of their choosing or they can have them recycled and maybe even get some money back. I thinkDell does a great job already in this department.

Just yesterday we extended our leadership in global recycling, announcing that we are ahead of schedule to achieve a multi-year goal of recovering 125 million kilograms (about 275 million pounds) of computer equipment by 2009. The company also renewed its worldwide challenge to computer manufacturers to offer free recycling to consumers.

Did you know that we are the only computer company in the world offering global recycling, as just part of our commitment and aspiration to be the greenest electronics company in the world? We have asked for ideas and help in this regard (see top of page here at Ideastorm and help us out).

Dell provides consumers a donation option for old computers. When you are ready for a new system there are neighbors in your community who could make use of your old one. Through Dell Recycling, consumers can donate their computers to the National Cristina Foundation to help disabled and economically disadvantaged children and adults in your own community. The foundation will pick up your computer at your door and put it to good use in your community. You can get all the details here: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/environment/en/recycling_...~
