Proof that Linux and OSS are ONLY for hobbyists!

-540 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems by phubert 03/06/07

Since so many have tried to say Linux/OSS are only for hobbyists and 'not for business', I thought it would help if we could supply anecdotal evidence of business, Education and government USE of Linux and OSS.

The title, clearly, is an exercize in light sarcasm.

More proof...

Go to the TOP500 supercomputers list site: http://www.top500.org/stats< select Operating System Family

LINUX has 75.2%
UNIX follows with 17.2%
BSD based (UNIX again, if you didn't know) is third with 0.6%
MacOS also has 0..6%
and "Mixed" comes in with 6.4%

Soooo... Windows is somewhere in "Mixed"???

That's great, I'm really happy that Linux, BSD and Unix are running so many super computers. Let them have this extermely specialized, nitche market. Let's take a look at the real world though, business computing. What are the stats like in small, medimum and large businesses? Honestly, I don't know, but I'm quite confident that Linux won't be so high.

I live in the real world; in my company, we only use linux, BSD, and one Mac OS X.
No need for windows at all. A few old machines still run a windows from time to time, but none of them are in everyday production.
By doing this, we save a lot of money in software licences. And in time, too: linux is much more reliable than the latest windows. And faster.

And, at home, my kids' computer runs under a debian with lots of games, and double boot with a win98, only for one old game.

I'm sorry, but in the real world, at my corporation of over 500 machines, we use Windows. . .running under VMware in Linux, just for the occasional Winbloze-only app. Hmm, maybe this wasn't the proof you were looking for after all :)

I can think of at least 2 'Windows Only' shops, where the workers and the management would swear blind that they are all Windows-Only .. because each desktop boots up with a big fat Win XP logo.

What they dont realise is that their handful of desktops and laptops connect directly to linux servers which provide not only file sharing, but host the mission critical applications like ERP and CRM that run the whole business. Their intranet and their website is also running on linux, the ISP that hooks them onto the net is all linux, and now their data aquisition equipment out in the field (the stuff that really generates the $$$ for these companies) is now running embedded linux.

But never the less they are 'Windows Only', just ask them.

kyliemanders - aka steve ballmer. What you and every other person fails to realise that America isn't the only country in the world. India and China have 4 times the people you do and are linux centric. Good for america. Most people here aren't american so get over it. It isn't called the World Wide Web for nothing. Brilliant useless lack of logic Steve...ooops kylie (sorry don't want to let your secret out).

Linux is here, it is good business practice, and most major servers have it, so your logic is nonsensical. As for private stuff, it isn't for hobbyists, though I do find it fun. My computer illiterate wife finds it easier and better to use than XP. Vista is even worse, and all the computer businesses will either find it good because it requires upgrades to run and bad because if people need specc'd computers to run it, they will look somewhere else both hardware and software wise.

"Windows is good for America"

Really?

Can you possibly GUESS how much EXTRA we're all paying in TAXES due to the inefficiency of Windows (no shared source, no open development) in EVERY LEVEL of government and public education?

Do you have any concept of how much staff time has been wasted because of DIFFERENT agencies (police, fire, local districts, etc.) ALL DOING THE SAME THINGS _separately_ developing or contracting for SOFTWARE running on Windows machines???

Might you have the SLIGHTEST CLUE as to how much this costs us all??

The ONLY ones benefiting from IT costs are those who support IT.

The ONLY ones benefiting from Windows are those who SUPPORT IT.

Moving ALL public entities to Linux would save literally tens of billions of dollars annually.

IT, whether it be your home PC, an outsourcing contract, or in-house systems and support, is ONLY a COST CENTER to businesses whose business is NOT IT.

Windows Vista Microsoft Bank Account 'UPGRADE' is NOT good for the Americas, the USA, or any country.

Think of all the money people will spend on running out and buying new Vista equipment, software, and hardware.
Billions $$$ for what? Does it work better? NO - same tasks, new day.

All that money getting Sucked out of the economy would be better spent on homes, food, construction, production, clothes - real items people really need.

After reviewing Vista, in all its slowness in the electronics store, I'll stick with my current home systems because Vista doesn't deliver.

Maybe Apple will wow people with OS X 10.5 - but the only reason I would buy 10.5 as an upgrade is for its advanced built in backup software.

I've downloaded and tried most popular Linux systems, and the 'Easy Linux' is www.puppylinux.org
Put your whole system on a USB stick - only a floppy disk would be smaller!
Puppy Linux has all the major apps in under 90 MB of storage, boot from live CD or from a USB stick. Have a diskless laptop.
MUCH faster than Windows Vista, and even faster than Windows XP.
Use Open Office, GIMP, etc. - the major programs you need.

Big Vendors Lend Credibility to Open Source
http://www.itbusinessedge.com/blogs/osb/index.php/101/big-vendors-lend-credib...
Government agencies increasingly turn to open source when vendors that they trust — those that can give the agencies the level of support to which they are accustomed — take on an open source business model or make open source a large part of their business. According to the U.S. Air Force’s principal deputy assistant secretary for acquisition, the government notices when big name vendors that made names for themselves selling proprietary products opt for open source. “They wouldn’t be moving in that direction if it didn’t make sense for their businesses,” he says. And if it makes sense for the likes of IBM and Sun Microsystems, it makes sense for the government.

GPL of OpenSolaris + GPL of Apple Darwin Open OS X 10.5 = Hasta la Vista, baby!

Sun & Apple can use GPL as a weapon,
Apple started something good with the Darwin project,
but Steve Jobs & crew have not been promoting or Updating the Apple Darwin project lately.

I would rather download Apple Darwin Open OS X onto my PC than use Ubuntu Linux.
It wouldn't have all the features of OS X 10.5, and it wouldn't have iLife -
But if It had Open Safari and Open iTunes - that is a good enough start for me!

Clearly, Gartner must be trying to resurrect Heathkit... they've gone into the Hobbyist business, bigtime!!! POOR Gartner!

The list is a little out of date, I fear. For one thing, I don't see Citroen or Life Insurance Company of India on the list, and they were very public about how many desktops they'd be using (20,000 for Citroen + 2500 servers, 60,000 for Life Insurance Co of India, plus 5,000 servers)

Yes, any reasonably complete list would be pretty long, indeed.
I'd like to see one of ONLY Windows-to-Linux DESKTOP migrations...

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,2135191,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03129TX1K0000616< Block's use of open-source technologies is not about saving money, but rather about creating revenue, acquiring and retaining customers, and providing technologies they really care about, said Mark West, the company's CIO, at the annual Open Source Business Conference here on May 22.

...

"It took five months to build, and allows customers to store their online data on their own PC or on our server, and it is the platform for future consumer offerings. But, without open-source technologies, this product would not have happened, not in a million years. It would have been too costly and taken too long to develop," West said.
