Keyboard with no Windows logo

1060 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops by lucabrivio 02/27/07

It would be nice to have a keyboard without Windows logos, especially for those that use other operating environments than Microsoft Windows.

There would be several alternatives to have a Windows' logo on the "Super" key, including:
- having a Dell logo instead;
- having a custom key (maybe less cost-effective?);
- having a key with no logo, and perhaps several stickers with Windows, KDE, GNOME logos, Tux, etc.;
- having some other nice icon;
- ...

Desktop keyboards, which have two Windows logo keys, offer even more chances for alternatives.

Not having those keys at all would be an option too, but I don't like so much huge bar spaces... ;-)

Remove the Windows Nuisance Key!

The windows keyboard key serves as nothing more then a nuisance. It should be easily customizable, or removed from the keyboard altogether. There is nothing more annoying then when you accidentally bump the windows key while playing a game, and you have to wait for windows to think for a period of time before your game minimizes and the start menu opens. When you finally get back to the game (if it hasn't crashed) you will probably have been killed. This key is easily disabled by editing the registry, but in my opinion it should not even exist since the start menu is just as easily accessible via hot key combination ctrl + escape.

This is actuall;y not a good idea. The windows key is actually used in several extremely handy hotkeys. Win+D Shows the desktop, Win+E opens Explorer, Win+M Minimizes all the windows. there are others but those are the ones I use.

http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/903/< the windows key is just a matter of changing a registry entry.
Just a note, i would probably use the windows key if it was placed ANYWHERE else on the keyboard. Its location next to ctrl & alt is what makes it such a nuisance.

I agree with snaxib.. bad idea. I use the Windows key for tons of stuff. Some others I use are Win+Break to bring up computer properties, Win+R to run a program, Win+L to lock my computer and Win+F to find files. It also makes a lot of sense to have a key dedicated to operating system tasks only, to minimize Windows 'stepping' on other programs' use of keyboard shortcuts.

I love that key, I actually use it a lot. The only thing I agree with is that it might be in an awkward position. Not that there is really much Dell can do about it.

No windows key!

Rather than having a windows key on a laptop have an OS key or something, not everyone has Windows.

You could have a key that says 'OS' which can be programmed to do what you want...?

For goodness sake leave it as it is; or you'll confuse people. I love Linux and hate Windows - but it's only 2 or 3 wasted keys. Configure them to do something else why not.

Windows, Microsoft and Bill Gates must die.
It is the only way.

I like Bill Gates. It's just Microsoft I want to "die". Bill would be welcome to help with Linux kernel code in my opinion. ^_^

This idea is not enough promoted.
Having a custom key instead of the win key is a good idea. However it is now possible to reconfigure the keyboard as user wants...
so why not simply REMOVE the win key at all. At least we save some space...

In many Linux distributions the "Windows" key is already established as the "Super" key. "Super" is neutral and so does not favor anyone; "Super" fits thematically as a meta-key between "Ctrl" and "Alt".

If you support the neutrality of this idea vote at:
