integrated eSATA port

500 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops by chuckles67 02/27/07

eSATA port enables fast external disk access (at bus speed). This would be an optimal way to edit video using a Dell laptop or desktop with an external hard drive.

Most notebooks only come with 1x 2.5" HDD which means a limit of under 200Gb. eSATA would allow those with a need for more space (or a need to run fast backups) to get heaps of space for not much money.
USB hard disks are too slow for pros.

In addition to the eSATA port on laptops, an eSATA port pass though on a dock would be nice. You come back to the office, plug your laptop in the dock, the external SATA drive or array spins up, and background backup or sync begins.

In the short term, Dell could promote offer an ExpressCard and external SATA drive combination to provide a high end to the current external USB drive offerings. Let me suggest the combination: SIIG eSATA ExpressCard54 SC-SAE512-S1 and Seagate FreeAgent Pro drive USB 2.0/eSATA 320/500/750GB and 1 meter e-SATA-eSATA cable for around $300.

Dell DEFINITELY needs to offer this, I've been looking for a laptop with an eSATA port for a year now, and they are so difficult to find!
Even if as an additional option (say $50), I would gladly pay.
Adding an eSATA port would be extremely cheap for dell, as dell laptops already have SATA controllers! All that's needed is the port!

I'm sure, they'll be out sooner than later.
