Make Gigabit Ethernet Standard on Notebooks

1060 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Laptops by techsage 02/24/07

This should be a given at the least for Small Business and above notebooks. Another option would be to at least allow an option for this with an additional charge. This feature is very important for those wishing to do quicker backups via the network (since this is faster than even via USB 2.0). Apple and Sony, if not others as well have this as standard at this point.

NOTE: I know that this is standard on XPS systems, but that is not good enough.

All of the Latitude notebooks come with standard gigabit network adapters. That would only make sense that it would be standard on Business class systems since gigabit networks prevail in a business environment. For the home user, gigabit is practically over kill since internet speeds aren't even at 1% of that. I do see, though, that students in universities might want that gigabit connection. Honestly, if your network infrastructure is not setup for gigagbit, its an actual waste. Its like updating a plumbing system with bigger pipe but the pump still pumps the same amount of water and will never utilize the extra capacity.

Duplicate, it was discussed. Or was it? I vaguely remember seeing something on the same lines.

The XPS 1330 doesn't have a gigabit ethernet RJ45 port. It's just 10/100.

Not much point for low end users to have it, only costs battery power.
100mb should be fast enough.

For high end company networks i can see it being a benefit however.

With proper power management (disable the PHY when the NIC doesn't have link) gigabit shouldn't use detectably more power than 10/100. It's a whole lot faster when you are using it, though.

I'd prefer 10/100 than gigabit with bad power management, but it's disappointing not to see well power-managed gigiabit included in XPS laptops like my M1330.

I agree on this one.

A large number of my peers are hooked up to a gigabit ethernet network in the office, only to find out that the real bottleneck lies within their fast ethernet interface on their notebooks.

it would be really nice to push through jumbo packets on our intranet system - and really having it to work with the systems. unfortunateoy, running out on fast ethernet isn't the right choice.

as for now, the rest are taking longer coffee breaks than they should if we were all hooked up on a true gigE network.

No need in case of a preinstalled Vista - it will reduce any LAN adapter to a modem.... :(
