Preinstalled Multiboot OS (Linux and XP)

320 points posted to Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot by coiledwire 02/24/07

I am so amaze that all this people (90% of them (I am pretty) sure never used linux) want suddenly LINUX.

I am not AGAINST LINUX at all. But we need to baby step toward LINUX. dell should offer preinstalled XP and LINUX to make peoples life easy.

- Do u guys know that U have to be PROGRAMMER in order to use current LINUX.
- lots of HARDWARE dont have linux drivers (not linux fault)
- DELL will need one hack of customer service if only Linux is offered (not every person is programmer).

That is why I suggest they should offer preinstalled Linux and XP for smooth transition.

You DON'T need to be a programmer. I'm not, and neither are my parents, grandparents, or elderly neighbors, yet they all seem to be able to hit the power button on their computers and surf the web on Ubuntu.

ALMOST ALL hardware has Linux support, some better than others, and the since Dell would be handling the Linux installation it would be fairly simple for them to include/create the trickiest drivers (graphics and wifi).

No one is saying Dell needs to switch completely away from Windows right away. The only very tricky part with Linux is really installation, which Dell would be doing before shipping out. The only places where Linux has issues really are games and proprietary software.

While I agree that dual-boot should be an option, it is not NECESSARY and I just had to respond to your incorrect assumptions about the state of Linux. Try Ubuntu 6.10 on some average hardware and you'll see ;-).

Ubuntu is easier to install (faster and fewer clicks) than Windows.

Actually, the best would be to install Xen, with Ubuntu and Windows *running at the same time*! Multiboot is so last century.
