PCMCIA slot for notebook

276 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by stdu00 02/23/07

I think the PCMCIA slot should be available on every notebook, more and more notebook have only PC Express slot, but till now a lot of pcmcia cards are not available in PC Express.
Actually, I wanted to change my notebook for a brand new Core 2 but I have to keep it just because I use a 3G PCMCIA card everyday.
Thx for listening

Add a PC-Card (PCMCIA) card slot to the XPS M1710 laptops, which only currently have an ExpressCard slot

Add a PC-Card (PCMCIA) card slot to the XPS M1710 laptops, which only currently have an ExpressCard slot.

Other laptop brands, like Toshiba, have both.

Bring back PCMCIA

I was gutted to discover that my Wireless card didn't fit in the slot on the side of my new laptop. I run Linux and the built in broadcom card was a nightmare to try to get working. So I looked around for one of these cards compatible with linux. The only one I could find was, you guessed it, a broadcom with EXACTLY the same (not working with linux) chipset as the built in wireless. Bring back PCMCIA.

PCMCIA

I just bought an Inspiron 1505, and what is missing? A PC CARD! The Malaysian laptop builder replaced it with the new ExpressCard slot. True, ExpressCards are faster and more efficient than the 10+ year old PC Card technology, but some laptop builders are now including BOTH. So that is my recommendation: include BOTH a PC Card and Express Card slot, until the PC Card technology goes the way of the ISA slot on motherboards. As a side note, there is only one company that makes adapters that you plug into the ExpressCard slot to run PC Cards, but apparently they have such a huge backlog that they won't be available until late June.
