Cheaper printer cartridges

60 points posted to IdeaStorm, Sales Strategies by phyriphiry 02/23/07

When I look at the price of the printers and the price of the cartridges : I see that there is something wrong. You get a new printer for the price of three cartridges (and this new printer comes even with one cartridge prefilled (sometimes half). I always have a bad feeling about this !!

And although now it is supereasy to to order new cartridges via the web, I have a feeling that the delivery costs for this makes them even more expensive. If I could just buy them in the stores, wouldn't they be cheaper ? (Maybe that's an illusion, because those retail stores also take a profit margin).

There are huge profits on selling ink cartridges. Google for "printer ink more expensive than Dom Perignon". It's something like seven times more expensive per milliliter? That's why printers are so cheap, cheaply made these days. That's why there are always new model printers being introduced, each needing a different cartridge. That's why Epson and Lexmark embed chips in their cartridges- so you can't refill them.

I would rather spend several hundreds of dollars on a quality constructed printer, that uses reasonably priced ink (laser toner in my case).
