Suggestion: display comments in latest-first order

190 points posted to IdeaStorm by phubert 02/23/07

A number of 'threads' are getting a bit long. It takes awhile to scroll down to the latest comments.

Latest-first (at least as an _option_) would eliminate this problem.

**

Also: PAGINATE thread displays so only the first page is loaded when the user selects the topic!

That is what the "recent ideas" view shows. Click the "recent ideas" tab directly above the list.
phubert
02/23/07
Yes, it DOES do that, BUT you are then taken to the thread and must scroll down to the bottom to SEE the latest!

I didn't read your post carefully enough. I apologize.

Here's an Idea, dell_admin1

Why don't we have comments for a thread in reverse-chronological order? Along with a pull-down list that gives us an option to view the top 10, 25, 50, 100 or 200 comments (where there are more than 150 comments). That way we don't have to pull up a thread that we frequent and end up scrolling all the way down before we post our comments.

More often than not, by the time we reach the end of the thread, we'd more likely forgotten what we wanted to say in the first place. Mostly due to the sudden brain_shutdown. :>)

This way there can be some change in the clutter of different threads.

Great idea. I'll vote for this as soon as I get home. Damn windows mobile phone, I've got to download flash or something.

Does your phone bluescreen, jervis? Just wanted to know! I know for sure that the architecture prevents that from happening, but I've heard of instances where an O2 Atom that runs on Windows CE has bluescreened, can't say clearly whether it was bluescreen, and crashed.

No, just has problems syncing with Vista, and doesn't display flash out of the box.

Been off computers for weeks now... Anxious to have the addition to the family, but not yet, doctors say next week, probably! Baby is large, so earlier I believe.

I gave up on marking dupes. I should go back to it, maybe I could get on the top 20 list finally. Then again hardly anything ever gets merged that I tag so why bother.

I was thinking the same! So, need to bother! If anybody starts, they'll still be at it after 2 days. So, it isn't worth starting at all.

Additionally, PAGINATE the thread display so only the FIRST PAGE LOADS when the topic is initially selected.

Less load on the servers, less wait time for the users!

good idea Paul...;)

One of our compatriots submitted the pagination by itself recently... I found this one buried away and decided to give it some CURRENT exposure and -added- that suggestion (thought I'd already made it -somewhere-) ...but I see quite a few new logins at the site, so perhaps worthy of revisiting.

Paul- this was submitted on Michael Dell's Birthday....;)
phubert
10/24/07
really? Feb 23??? what an interesting coincidence. Didn't get any better treatment (by Dell) for it... perhaps because I didn't wish him "Happy Birthday!" I could offer a belated one here... For that matter, Petzy, since you DID know it was his birthday, did -you- submit a "Happy Birthday, Michael" 'suggestion'?????? :-)
petzymathuram
10/24/07
well ....yes but not in ideastorm..but in the Dell Website..Ideastorm wasnt there then....;)
I knew he was born in the month of February, but dint know his date. so on the first of February I submitted a wish for him....;)
why are you asking Paul?...but later I came to know his birthdate..its close to George Washington's....;)
phubert
10/24/07
well, typical American that I am, I don't even know George Washington's birthday!!! No, I'm partly kidding, Petzy. 'ribbing you' as we say. Friendly, good-natured humor. At the same time, you seem to try to do and say pleasant and encouraging things, so indirectly making a point of your nature.

Don't worry petzy I just think that dell_admin1 is a little anxious at the moment and decided to take it out on us.
phubert
10/25/07
petzy - I suspect your insistence that a number of us were someone other than who we said (including dell_admin1) had gotten SO annoying and so many (NOT to include myself, of course) had begun to report it as abuse... perhaps that is why.

Didn't I keep asking you to simply believe us?
Dropping the subject, as you agreed to, is probably all that is needed.
Your enthusiasm, especially for Dell, and then your friendliness to all have been your most endearing traits.

You have also, however, shown that you can comment intelligently, especially in regard to organizational issues.

I hope Dell is aware that you would be missed!
phubert

Interesting, bb... hadn't caught that, but others often see things I do not.

Certainly, I hope things go well for her ... and for Dell ... and for this site.

There is so much potential for them to tap ... but I wouldn't be surprised at all that there would be resistance in the company at higher levels... what I've proposed in my latest 2 suggestions could certainly stretch their 'comfort level'.

Still, to MAKE real progress or great strides, one MUST challenge one's "comfort levels"!!!

Being bold can be very scary... but the results can be 'over the top' as well.

I DO believe Dell has the potential to stand out... perhaps they should consider Google... not so much for what they do, but for HOW they do it!

Paul- You're confusing me Paul...do you mean that I will not be allowed to help Dell in Chennai?..tell me plainly plzz...
Ofcourse I have 100% confidence on all fo you...
I'll tell you the reason why I kept on asking who you were:
- I thought I shouldnt disrespect anybody if they belong to the high class dignitaries or holding higer honors after I realized that valuable people are around
- If I really knew, then I can give them the respect
- I have been teared over here, but now with you all as my friends, I thought I will find and really record who my "real friends were" in my life to keep you all with a great thanks in my heart
- I was curious to know that I can be secure with all of you as my friends from the evil people over here

Am I wrong any where?..If this is so plz let me know...I
phubert

No, I was reacting to bb's -question- above: Dell is threatening to ban you from this site petzy...???

Sorry for any confusion.

I think Americans can see it differently, vis a vis 'respect'. Unlike many Asian nations/cultures, our view of 'democracy' is that EVERYONE is TRULY equal (tho we don't always act that way!!!) ... there is no 'high' or 'low' and the 'lowest' have every right to openly challenge the 'highest'.

In the same manner, I felt every right to challenge my father, my teachers, etc. And, so also to more than a few of us, women are fully equal with men with the same rights I have just described.

To me, the President of the U.S., the heads of corporations, etc. should show EQUAL respect to the janitor! To the homeless. I don't see them as deserving any greater honor or privilege.

But, yes, jervis961, myself and a long list are only ordinary people... tho ordinary people are often the ones who can make a great difference. THAT is the American concept!

I have worked and live in America for some years and find it to be very hierarchical and class based, though equally striving to pretend that it isn't. Junior staff in companies are extremely deferential to senior staff. They pretend (hope) they will get to the top through merit but spend most of the time networking, looking for advantage and favor with senior staff. The US corporate culture and national political system is about as democratic and meritocratic as the Vatican. The beauty of the system is that 'ordinary folk' don't see it that way, so the system replicates itself. Ordinary Americans are like medievil surfs. John Lennon said it best in a song "you think you're so clever, classless and free, but your still peasents as far as I can see"

Thanx so much Paul..your words are really comforting...;)
i need your re assurance once more, if I'm not disturbing you tooooo much plz:

Can I go ahead to help Dell fearlessly and with all my enthusiasm?
phubert
10/25/07
Well, yes, bb, I recognize that... and have personally militated against it my entire life. It ISN'T what we SAY we believe.

When I recently implemented a 'signature' at varlinux, I used the following:

----------------
I don't support what my country IS, but rather what, by its highest ideals, it SHOULD be.............

Hopefully, I live that way.
