Backlit Keyboards

22330 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

This is a great feature with macs that is particularly useful on airplanes and when editing video (where dark environments are desirable). It would definitely be a worthwhile option.

Laptop Keyboard Lighting

I think we all have his problem... it's 3' o'clock in the morning, pitch black out. You need to get some work done. Instead of lighting the house, just flick the switch and light your keyboard. Too bright? Turn the knob to lower the brightness level. Very simple idea. IBM already has something like that in place with it's older laptops I believe. I woud prefer this idea to be installed on laptops but you could do desktop keyboards as well. Not all of us are night-dwellers but, most of us are :D

IBM does offer this on all of its business-class laptops. I recently showed this feature to about 5 users that were unaware and had everyone with chattering with excitement. I didn't think the feature would be that popular, but travelers and people that work late at night love the lighting of the keyboard. I would definitely reccomend this for the Latitude series, at a bare minimum.

cmcesq: I have used several laptops and the light broadcasted from the displays do not adequately light the keyboards. Also, the common position for the display is opened up somewhat greater than 90 degrees, so most of the light is projected toward the viewer and up and way from the keyboard. The difference between the bright transmitted light of the display and minimal reflected light from the keyboard can even make the keyboard look darker than it is.

Keyboard backlighting for notebooks

Implement keyboard backlighting on Dell notebooks. And for that matter, on all Dell keyboards perhaps.

Whenever working in a dark environment (airplane, dark room, etc), even though I am a fairly good touch-typist, every minute or so while typing a lot I find myself struggling to find a particular key (symbols; function, etc). I get frustrated because I then have to either turn on a light temporarily or - more often - shut the notebook screen "half-way" so that I can use the shining screen light to see the keyboard!

There are plenty of USB-port plug-in lights to solve this, I know. I own one or two myself. But it would make entirely much better sense if the keys themselves were backlit, and could be easily turned on/off with a press of a button on the site of the notebook, or on the screen bezel, with an auto-off timer perhaps to save power.

There are many aftermarket backlit keyboards out there, and notebooks seem to be the products that need it most but don't have it. At least Dell notebooks don't have it. And they should. Maybe desktop keyboards too?

Merged Comment originally posted 02/26/07
Well, I really don't think it will be pricey, depending on how DELL wants to address this issue, there are multiple solutions to this suggestion.
1. Using Radium based paint(As in the wrist watch) instead of the regular paint.
2. Since Dell notebooks already have a light sensor on the LCD panel, that sensor can also be used to provide lighting solution on the keys of the Keyboard. Fiber optic based lighting can be one heck of a answer to this issue.

Any comments?

Illuminated keyboard for notebooks

Time and time again, Notebooks need to have illuminated keyboard so that users will have the opportunity to work at low light without switching on the lights in the study room or bedroom.

Some of the suggested ideas:

1. Illuminated keyboard
2. Notebook screen that can be turned 180 degrees on the horizon to provide better mobility and view of the screen.

peterjs,
Is it just me, or is the screen not red? If the screen is not red, then your night vision is "ruined". Several professional photographers have purchased MacBook Pro systems, and have changed the white LEDs to red, to allow the computer to be used in the dark room.

I also think that making the keyboard LEDs a simple "Fn" key switch to turn them on and off, why waste battery life to power LEDs that won't always need to be on. Sure the amount of power needed will be very minimal, but we're talking about laptops that already have short enough battery lives.

Having used both a macbook pro, lenovo thinkpad, and lower-end macbook, I have to say that this is now an essential feature I would look for in a new laptop. A backlit keyboard is amazingly convenient. Having used a laptop with a backlit keyboard, the lower-end macbook is simply horrible to use in a darkened environment because of the lack of this feature. The thinkpad's keyboard light is quite a good alternative, I like it, but it does not 'wow' me. It's a simple solution with no customization. But the macbook pro's backlit keyboard beats them all hands down. Especially since it has the following features: (1) automatic detection of environmental lighting conditions, (2) manual on/off, (3) ability to vary backlight intensity. I hope to see this not only in Dell's laptops, but for all manufacturers! It makes a world of difference.

I guess you mean cell phones and PDAs right?

Well those have got different types of keys, those keys are made for small size and small key movements, making it easy to put one LED somewhere into the device and have it's light distributed to all keys. I'd say that it might be a bit of a challenge to to do that with very little power on a full-scale PC keyboard and still have the keyboard look good and work well. I've seen a external USB keyboard which was backlit but it didn't convince me optically because they keys were transparent to get the light through and it didn't look well especially when the light was not on. Do you have an high-res photo of a well-looking and well-typing backlit keyboard anywere?

Personally, I still think that a small light in the lid like on the Lenovo T61 would be better, but maybe you can show me a high-res photo of a good back-lit keyboard.

Future models (such as Inspirons) should be including this feature as well, but you may have to wait for the next gens to come out with this option (the Inspiron 1420/1520/1521, etc were only just released)

Working at night in dark makes it so damn difficult to type on the keyboard. It would be awesome to have a soft backlight keyboard highlighting just the characters! may be the light of the LCD screen on laptop can be channeled down to the under body of keyboard or through the letters in some way. Or may be some other way to direct soft light on the keyboard to make it easier to type in the dark. Just like in mobile phones.

Lighted keyboards

One of the most innovative substitutions for my Optiplex 520 has been a lighted keyboard called the Firefly Borealis. This is not like the poorly made previous lighted keyboard I purchased which did not illuminate the individual keys and which I soon discarded. The Borealis uses a sheet of bluish/green luminescent material beneath the entire surface of the keys and thus, gently lights up all of the keys individually. And the keyboard itself has a very quiet and graceful keystroke. Now, I no longer have to always shine an external light on the keyboard to use my computer in a dimly lighted room. I believe that many people would purchase this keyboard as an option such as your elliptical mouse. It is not unreasonable to assume that a customer would be willing to pay $35-$45 dollars for this wonderful keyboard. Or, in the alternative, you could factor it in as original equipment. People love these innovative features and I personally have looked for years for the perfect such device.
A clue to it's success in the marketplace can be found in a new combination Masterlock. In today's NY Times (4/1/07) There was a news article about this lock which has LED's which light-up as the numerals are turned. The lock has been extremely successful at a premium of some 75% over a regular Masterlock.
The other day I told one of your gold-tech reps about this keyboard--James Crews in the Tennessee office--and suggested he submit this idea. I don't know whether he did or not, but I wanted to make sure that Dell was apprised of this product.
Furthermore, since this is an extant fledgling product, I'm sure you can make a good deal with the company who makes the Borealis and of great importance in these circumstances would be Dell's ability to speedily offer the product to the public and thus "scoop" all of the other computer companies. At present, I know of no company that offers a lighted keyboard for a desktop. Apple, I believe, does offer a lighted keyboard on some of it's notebooks but it's not well advertised.
In sum, based on my experience with consumer goods, see: hatetoshave.com and antiagingmax.com, I strongly believe that an optional lighted keyboard for desktops would not only fly, but would also generate a lot of articles about Dell's new option. How about adding the red lights from the Latitude D620 ATG to light keyboards in the dark, to all notebooks?

Dim Light for the Keyboards

Currently, the laptop or desktop's keyboard doesn’t have "dim light". We could not see the keyboard during dark or night time.

I suggest having something like dim light under the keyboard or glowing on the keyboard. It will help us to recognize the letters while the dark area is located or bedtime. This is for internal and external customer. It’s a possible increase sale to be competitive with this kind of project.

This would be good for night travelers on board airlines as well.
