Sell ink cartridges at local retail

933 points posted to Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies by guardianxps 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

So, for convenience and ease of access, can Dell sell ink cartridges through local retail stores? I realize Dell is an online store; and not suggesting you stop the online part, but also make it available through retail stores. Considering weather or other natural occurrences, and the latest discomfort from DHL leaving the ink cartridges on the door just to be stolen gets annoying.

We now sell ink cartridges at Staples. Click here for more details

Dell printer ink should be available at local retail outlets

Would love to buy ink at local retail outlets..best buy, circut city or frys, for my dell printers. I have two of them at Iam currently selling them due to this fact only. Its a pain waiting to recieve ink refills via mail. So it looks as if I will have to swith to epson or hp for my printing solutions.

how about auto refill service and automatically sends you a new ink catridge when the ink is running low. What could be better is that customers can getter discount because it is a recurring business. it's a win-win for both customer and dell

I am surprised this idea didnt become more popular. There have been posts, blogs, and other requests for this since Dell started selling printers. Kinda surprising.

So yeah, I am currently speaking to a CX right now who would like this to happen because he really needs to go and get some INK.. and it will take a few days for him to get it. Not really good for CE guys.. I hope we can resolve this issue by making this available in Retail Stores. instead of ordering it online.

Multiple sourcing for printer cartridges!

Dell printer customers should have the option and convenience to buy printer cartridges from local suppliers. I shouldn't have to wait 4 days for a toner cartridge that I need today! If I have an HP printer, I can get a cartridge from a dozen different sources in town, which serves me, the customer.

People can wait 4 or 5 days for a new computer, but very few can wait 4 days for a printer cartridge. Toner and paper dynamics are very different from computers - stop using the same model to address them. Authorize reputable local dealers to carry Dell consumables. Serve the customer FIRST.

AMEN! I love my 3100 color laser, but the factory 2k page cartridges are a joke. Dell just took on my former boss, Mike Cannon (of Maxtor fame) to improve global distribution. I could have helped there: want to sell more printers? SELL MORE PRINTERS, at places people shop!

I do a lot of printing and don't want to be raked over the coals when I need to replace the toner. The pricing should be lower on these, afterall, it is just ground up plastic, and we should be able to get them in more places, in our timeframe. I think it is a joke that Dell also blackmails you by saying a refill kit voids the warranty. People consider refills because the OEM cartridges are too small and the 4-color set is only $30 away from a new printer.

Also, make them hold more toner. Every new cartridge I have installed had toner 'sloshing' around inside, in otherwords, they were not close to full. Now, I am not sure if they need a little space inside or not, but I suspect these things are like razors anymore, whereas they give you the main unit for cheap, knowing they will clean house on consumables (blades, cream, etc.).

Printers are usually impulse items anyhow, like the candy bars at the grocery store checkout. If someone wants a printer, that is a plus to Dell, no need in ripping them off more. It would be nice if Dell did not take a page from the GM operations manual, the one that says make money on the cars AND rob people blind on parts.

My dad bought a Dell printer and has this same issue. As a business model it is transparently less customer-friendly than other printer vendors, and generates ill will toward Dell in exchange for a meager profit. Dumb. Setting up a user-feedback website is smart. Smart people at Dell, find the dumb people, and try to explain this to them.

I agree. I've complained to my Dell rep about this. It's not about saving a buck (although their pricing is painful), it's about keeping a business running by being able to run to a local office "Super Store" and buying a cartridge. Most of our printers use a Lexmark or Xerox print engine, but the cartridges need to be Dell branded in most cases.

This is shouldn't be an idea, but a FACT! As a college student, the need for quick and accessible printer cartridges is a priority. That's why HP is a world leader (not only on the pc market) but in the printer industry. Then again, what are the brands we see on retailers? HP, Lexmark... HP...HP... Etc. Therefore I honestly believe Dell should expand its selling operations to include retailer stores as OfficeMax, CompUSA, Wal-Mart and even Walgreens! (Yeah, they sell printer cartridges too!) This is a perfect idea to increase Dell's sales and recognition in the market. As a matter of fact, I have a HP DeskJet 3320 and a Dell AIO 810 (both are great products) but my main printer is the first one, why? Simple, if I run out of ink, I know that I can go to the next Walgreens and buy it! If I use my AIO 810 for printing, then I have to call Dell for a replacement... which way is faster? More productive? Be the judge. Then again, I only use the AIO 810 for scanning. Think about it Dell, this will make many happy customers out there!

Sell printers and ink at retail outlets

Dell has built a reputation on Build-to-order and supply chain management, but neither Printers or ink are built to order. Sure they may have an option for more memory, but so what. I can always add this later, or have a different sku for different memory configs.

Why not sell these in retail stores? When I'm buying a printer, I want to see the quality and output, so I head to my local Best Buy or Frys to try out a new printer.

Start Selling Dell Ink Cartridges and Toner at Dell Outlets and Walmart

I do not know if this idea has already been put on board... if it has :) I'm sorry to repeat it :) ....

I was thinking that products that we want on a regular basis should be made available to us readily. Ex : Ink Cartridges and Toners. Dell should start selling them through its stores and through Walmart. Also tie-ups with other vendors would help customers get their ink without even waiting for a day.

Dell should sell ink and toner for their printers at walmart

Dell should sell toner and ink for all their printers at Wal-Mart because many people cannot wait a day when they need ink urgently. The fact that Hp and other manufactures sell ink at stores puts Dell printers at a distinct disadvantage.

That's an awesome idea... It is annoying to order online for a consumable like ink cartridges only to have to wait for delivery.

And let walmart make all the margin on the ink instead of Dell? Dell's ink cartridges are extremely well priced, and let's not forget the great system they have of reminding you to order an extra ink cartridge, WELL in advance. How long have you had an inkjet printer? A while I am guessing. You still don't keep spares on hand?

More than once I've ordered ink cartridges from Dell, only to have them neglect to process the order. Also, I've had it take weeks for the cartridges to arrive. Some of Dell's printers suck up ink so fast that you would need to keep a dozen on hand to have enough to last.
If I could purchase a cartridge locally I wouldn't have to put up with Dell's World Renowned customer dis-"service".

I'd like to be able to walk into a Staples, Walmart, etc. with a $20 in hand and walk out with a replacement Ink Toner cartridge.

A magazine recently had a coupon for walking into a chain store with an empty cartridge and a $10 bill - and walking out with the cartridge refilled.

Is this what Dell wants? There is a need to show that Dell cares. Charging more than $20 and not having instant delivery is a lose/lose

I'm pleased with the cost of ordering, but the delay can be convenient. My Dell tells me how much ink is left in the cartridge. Other computers do not. thus they are also not convenient to the consumer

Well, that's nice....but the nearest Staples is ~ 50+ miles away.....and today for the 2nd time in less than a month, my printer cartridges were returned to Dell because DHL and USPS cannot (will not?) deliver my package as addressed to my physical street address. I only receive USPS mail at my PO Box and Dell will not deliver to a PO Box .... Since there is not an option when ordering online to select UPS delivery, I am now entering my 2nd week without my color printer cartridges which I desperately need for a project (and my last black ink cartridge is hanging on by a thread!) Walmart please and FAST!!!!!
