Bloatware

585 points posted to Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops by saveriov 02/20/07

The first thing I do when I purchase a Dell (3 laptops/1 desktop) is to remove any trial software and programs preloaded which are not directly related to the operating system and/or hardware. I have my own preferences about CD/DVD burning, image editing, anti-spyware and the like. An option to have JUST the OS installed without the bloatware would be welcome.

I would love to be able to charge Dell for all the hours I have invested in removing all their affiliate partner software "trials". If I wanted all this cheesy software I would have ticked the box called "please fill my drive up with every after sale, DELL commission generating trial offer known to man"

All this pre-installed software is paid for and subsidizes the cost of the hardware. I hope Dell keeps going with whomever pays them the most to keep the system costs as low as possible.

PLEASE!!! This is very frustrating to me. I hate having to get a NEW computer and having to uninstall software. It just seems backwards. Also, some of those programs can be difficult to get completely removed.

Preinstalled shit is not only just a bore, it is offensive. It is like buying a car with strange passengers that have already occupied the seats. Every single PC or notebook that comes in here gets formatted, reinstalled and fine-tuned for P.E.R.F.O.R.M.A.N.C.E. (What else for????) The only positive thing about preinstalled shit is that it gives the warm feeling that at least the hard-disk is burnt-in.

The cost of the hardware is not that high. Just take a look at how much it would cost you to make your own comp. I think you'll find the price is comparative, and taking into consideration that the average consumer does not have the purchasing power of bulk buying, I'd imagine the costs for Dell are significantly less.

Please remove the extra programs. It takes time and effort to remove all of them. I spend an average of 1 hour removing extraneous software every time I buy a new computer. That's one hour I could spend trying to find the cure for cancer, or working so I can buy a second Dell PC.
