Trickin' Out Your Dell

727 points posted to Dell Community, Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops by john_saddington 02/17/07

Dell should provide ways to "trick out" your dell, or provide support for those who are interested.

For example, say a consumer of your XPS Desktop line wants to add cool looking LED lighting systems inside and outside of their box. Providing "support" for that (either using social media, like forums where other customers could help each other, or "official" support) would be nice.

Also, possibly providing places on a gaming system that allow "expandability" beyond just the usual memory upgrade... like addition of a cool attachment for headsets... microphones, mice, keyboard, whatever... or, creating "aftermarket" parts, like changing out the chassis or something. Just like a car!

Laptop Designs

Embrace new technology before the other guys and put stuff in that others already have... Slot loading DVD drive... LED lit LCD screens... backlit keyboards...
Also, Dell's laptops are great for what is inside, but looks count too. They really need to get some coolness factor in them.

customization for notebooks

Dell has always been at the forefront of customization with the big box warrenty. I would like to see the following for the consumer side

-4 form factors : 12/14/15.4/17 for the screen size with a high resolution option
-graphics options : integrated/x1400-geforce7400/x1600-7600 class graphics cards
-the integration of external graphics cards as they become available

Fully customizable computers

Just imagine... You supply the shell (be it laptop or desktop, laptop prefered) and a overwhelming list of compatable parts. We choose what we would really like to see in out computer and only that. I know you do that already, but im talking advanced. Every single piece is an option. What motherboard? What RAM? What vendor? ect.

You woud truely be supplying us with custamizable pc's.

Slim (skin)case that fits tight for notebook (even 12" notebooks)

Smaller notebooks are often te small for standard (skin)cases (a case that fits perfectly around the notebook and is used when you put the notebook inside an casual bag) (I even bought a case for my 12" dell with my dell product and ordered a notebook case to fit this notebook with it, when i got it i, i could put almost two 12" dell notebooks next to each other)

I want to change the Look and Feel of my Computer/Laptop every quarter

Can I get to buy innovative and creative designs of Chassis for my Desktops and Laptops that I have purchased. When I am buying a premium high-end computer, I would also like to have a Fresh and Creative look for it.

Why don't Dell help me replace the Chassis or the exterior of my computer without replacing my entire computer/laptop. There are a lot of young customers of Dell who would love to do that. Come out with a lot of Re-Skinning options.

Custom Cases/Case Modding

Dell is missing out on a huge sector of enthusiast computer shoppers. Custom painting and panels is huge right now. Can you imagine a case that looks like that with a green backlit Dell logo on it? Don't only offer something like that to the very high end machines either. People who can only afford $1,000 for a Desktop/Laptop are just as proud as those who can shell out $3,000. Imagine that kind of paint on my E1505 Laptop? Not really paint either, looks like some kind of baked on decal.

I really like the idea of a custom case. This has exploded in the cell phone industry. Just picture a pink leather, swarovski crystal studded carrying case! A Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton or even Nine West partnership could be just aroud the corner. Dell's huge network of global sourcing agents could probably get personalized cases dirt cheap in China too...

funky designs

Why not enable consumers to design the visual look of their own notebook or desktop. Not only colours (customisable, not just pick list of 6 different designs), but textures (ultra smooth, leather finish, rubber, natural wood veneer...), designs (such as popular images...England beating Germany 5-1 in Munich, British flag etc), or ability to use own images (photos of favourite places, family images etc) on the cover

Case mods

How about some sick case mods, like windows, neon, glowing keyboards, and built-in subwoofers! This would be absolutely awesome.

Ummmmmm Isn't the point of having a case mod to be unique and have some self design into it? King Missile has a song out there called "Different," you should check it out.

New Chassis for XPS 700

Get a new chassis for the top of the line XPS 700 desktop. Give it color options like Alienware. The current chassis looks big and bulky. The new cooling system is nice, but the box looks like a monolith out of an old sci-fi film.

Allow the end user to modify his/her computer..

I would like to see Dell allow the end user to modify their computer as they see fit..
I know it's a far fetched idea but wouldn't you like to be able to modify the FSB yourself if you wanted to..

Being able to adjust many of the settings in the bios would be one of the greatest gifts Dell could ever give to it's customers..

That would be pretty cool - have a special "Pimp my Dell" section in the buying process ;-)

Car Modding and Case Modding are two ways 'standard' devices can earn additional revenue for the original supplier.

A Dell PC might cost $899, but add color changing sound activated case lighting, case windows, a glowing black light power supply, and glowing fans - $1199.

Just another great way for Dell to make a buck! Profits are a good thing, right?
