System Security - Fingerprint Scanners

692 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops by guardianxps 02/17/07

I would like to see computers have some new technology added like Fingerprint scanners. Stolen computers are an issue and adding this will create a better level of security. The only downside I can see would be if one person sold the computer to another and didnt reset the scanner.

Still, I would like to see this and I am sure others would too.

both bios scanner (finger print scanners) and low jack (a way to track down and find your computer if it's missing) are now available though dell.

I don't know too much about it but I think lo-jack is avaialble to every laptop. This is what i've learned so far.

Dell CompleteCare service for notebooks now includes LoJack theft protection software. This is how it works. All Dell notebooks include a hidden “agent” in the BIOS. (You’ll recognize the agent by the dark sunglasses, earpiece and microphone in its sleeve.) After installing LoJack software and connecting to the Internet, the agent is activated. If a customer does not install the software, the agent remains dormant. Should a customer’s notebook be lost or stolen, they file a police report and notify the Absolute Software Recovery Team. Once the stolen system is connected to the Internet, it can be tracked and reported to law enforcement personnel.

I don't know all the laptops that have the scanner. The Latitude D620 has the bios scanner as an option.

Good Idea, for safety and ease of use.
the fingerprint reader could be use to avoid to type passwords in softwares and websites.

Currently these are seen on the latitude and precision portables only. This would be toward all laptops, consumer or business.

Fingerprint Recognition for Security

Why not offer an option for a fingerprint scanner for notebook security similar to what Lenovo offers. This is a great option for both the consumer and corporate clients.

Fingerprint scanning is easy to defeat. Why would you put your faith in a piece of garbage security system? If they can be defeated by Gummi Bears, Jello, and Playdoh then why would I want to pay to have it in my system? Google

That's not to say its a bad idea. The technology just needs to be matured a little.

Then again most security measures on a laptop can be broken without too much trouble... However some of the Lattitudes DO offer fingerprint readers as an option. For example the D620

Fingerprint Reader Option for all Notebooks

I like how most of the Latitudes have fingerprint readers, but I think fingerprint readers should be an option on all the notebooks Dell sells (Inspiron, XPS!!!, Precision Mobile Workstations).

Where'd my text go? Anyway what the original text said was:

One thing Dell lacks on their notebooks is a biometric fingerprint scanner. One that can be bypassed with a 256bit encrypted, minimum 12 digit password or switched off in BIOS.

I cant believe how fast this got demoted. I like the idea and wold use it like Lenovo, with a password program. You put all your passwords in the program and when you need one for something you scan your print and the program enters it for you.

@jervis961 - Check Out Myflash www.adata.com.tw/adata_en/product_show.php?ProductNo=AFP1ZZZWH
It is a USB Flash Drive with Finger Print Scanner. I have had one for about a year.
It has and onboard Utility that is a password manager. It is like a key for my Computer.
When inserted and authenticated the passwords are automatically entered into your browser.
The Finger print scanner works well and also allows for a secondary PWD.
You only have to scan 1x and all your passwords are entered while browseing until the USB key is removed.
The convenience of having the PWD's entered automatically really surprised me!

Yet conspicously missing on the Inspirons...

And the ones on the Latitudes are not Vista compatible.

Being able to transport all your saved links with pwds (Not to mention DB files) between systems via an authentication USB is a pretty neat
feature, I think. Perhaps Dell could provide a matched USB FP1 for each PC/Notebook system. Kinda like keys to the car? Maybe a special
USB slot on the right front edge of a notebook manufactured to be removable specificately for a scan device?

It's only a matter of time. I'm pretty sure the one on Latitude D630 and D830 (release in a couple of days) would be Vista Compatible.

stupid solutions for stupid people...

How about a Genital Scanner?

If the 'password' fails - a sharpened blade 'deletes' the incorrect 'password'.

Vostro 1400 = no fingerprint reader. Obviously last year when Dell was designing the Vostro the fingerprint reader was nixed.

Lenovo just came out with a Linux ThinkPad T61 with a working fingerprint reader. If Lenovo can do it, why can't Dell?

Finger Print Sensor

Built in finger print sensor (biometrics) so you can access websites without having to try to remember your passwords. Some other laptops already have them. Make it an option not a standard feature and don't charge a huge amount for it.

This is currently an option on the D620 model laptops, to name one example.
