External graphics using PCI-E Cable

2792 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Laptops by error 02/17/07

Make a laptop with integrated graphic card (for long battery life) and use pci-e cabling specification to connect external graphic card by cable (for ultimate gaming power)

Imagine 12" notebook with power of external GF8800GTX :)

I posted something similar before I saw yours. This would be huge for me. I've never been able to commit to a laptop as my primary machine because I'm a graphics guy by trade and need to work with the latest cards. It's not practical to keep all my work sync'ed between both machines so my laptop is reduced to being used for the occaisional email.

That's just me though. The broader application of something like this is that it would be possible to dock into a station that has large displays. You need a hot video card to push enough pixels to run a 30 inch display. You probably need SLI to get enough pixel pipelines to run any game at full resolution. No laptop should ever ship with a card that can push a display so much larger than the one attached to it.

The idea works for some people but Dell may then choose to supply cheap video cards as the only installed option because "you can plug in a better card externally". I wouldn't want to have to carry around another add on just to get good use out of my laptop. I would rather have them supply good video cards and make the laptop upgradable for future ones.

to be honest, the idea is treffered to 14" and smaller notebooks, bigger should have internal gpu and maybe upgrade possibilities

AMD lasso. Possibility of having 3 external 16x pci express slots. Check out this: http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=5037

This would be incredible, i've been waiting for something like this for a very long time. The problem with ASUS's solution and now MSI's, is that the express card slot they use is onle PCIe 1x, which would criple a high end card. The PCIe cable can be 16x. How great would it be to have a super light 12" laptop but when you get home you plug a cable into the PCIe port on the side and at the other end is a 8800 ULTRA.

I think that AMD's Lasso is very similar idea to this.

I would love this idea.

Main problem is the cost involved, you'd need a 16x PCIe cable which is not a cheap component, plus all the electronics that go into stabilizing the signal over any kind of distance. Dell is not known for trail-blazing new technologies, which can be costly.

Still, it would be awesome to finally have real flexibility/upgreadability in portables.

Heh, according to what ati said 'box' for card + cable is rly cheap in production. It's up to seller how much they will want for it. So if dell overcharge RAM mem so much, I don't want to know how much it can cost ;)
But anyway awesome idea. If I only could plug 4870 (it's ati only for one year) into xps m13xx/15xx I vote for !
