External PCIe x16 for laptops

181 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Laptops by pdonket 02/16/07

With the arrival of the new ASUS XG gaming station, it would need some alteration...but something to think about is that dell starts putting PCIe x16 on the outside of laptops, like an express card slot. Then creates a dock station for desktop graphic cards. This is in my opinion a great idea for a gamer who also would love mobility. For example, say in a M1210, even the top graphics option is not exactly a power house due to size constraints. Well with this system, when you need mobility you simply un-tether the station for the GPU, and re-tether to game at home.

It doesn't even have to be a slot, just another port on the notebook.

This would be my ideal setup as well but I doubt it will go ahead as while better for consumers, from a business pov, it might in the long-run reduce the need for users to upgrade notebooks as frequently which means potential loss of sales. All in all not much incentive for dell to implement this (at least that I can see; unless the external unit is proprietary and there is considerable markup - which makes it less appealing) even though it would be a very useful notebook feature.
