Let me replace the Windows Key for a Linux key in the keyboard

It would be nice to be able to change the windows key for a linux key when you build your machine. Every linux user would love that! :)

02/12/08		 It seems as if the suggestion was already posted here. There was a suggestion there that if the system is a Windows one, then it should have Windows keys, that if the system is an Ubuntu one (Ubuntu is the distribution of Linux that Dell now offers on PCs), then it should have Ubuntu keys, and if the system has both operating systems, then both logos should be there.

02/12/08		 It'd be funny if later you wanted to sell the lappy on Ebay or something and you got low bids because of that one key being a penguin.

What about naming the key something universal like "Menu" key?

02/12/08		 I like this idea! Assuming they keys are the snap-on variety, it couldn't be too difficult to offer Linux keys that the user could use to replace their Windows keys (either facotry installed, or ships with the keyboard).

For now, we can crop these stickers to only keep the ubuntu logo :)

02/15/08		 Im not sure. I moted because it sounds cool, but as far as the actual name on the key... no preference as long as it isn't a windows logo. Tux sounds pretty cool though.

02/15/08		 I like tux also. On my laptop that has Sabayon on it, I stuck a decal of a tuxedoed penguin on it. He also has a red knited hat and scaff.

Turn The Windows Logo Key Into a DELL Logo key and that will neutralize everything.

02/16/08		 Thing is there is more than just one or two OS on the market Instead of keeping the Logo to something OS specific I personally think it would be far wiser to use a neutralization logo instead of an OS specific logo.

I myself use linux i think it would be neat to have a tux logo there but, issues will arise making it more efficient to just go with a neutral design.

Examples :
For said key to be different they would have to have the key placed in manually which in mass quantities can be a problem if a key is wrong placed the stability of that key becomes questionable too as it is a swappable part when you think about it. (Also waterproofing a swappable key may not be the easiest of task.)
Giving in to making special keys can become a problem as more keys will become requested with new OS.
The idea of waiting and printing the logo on doesn't work out quite right either as the efficiency of production is slowed down and if done in a fast way it more than likely wont be quite correct.

It is always good to consider certain things when dealing with a business. In the end a business's duty is to make profit but fulfilling larger wanted things that will help them attract customers is a good concept that should be used.

02/18/08		 @citroentech: You are getting closer. Though it needs to be made sure the "OS" isn't in plain text as it might confuse some people (Using Letters can be confusing to new keyboard users.). Putting Win + Tux key would not work correctly as there are more OS logo's out there that may emerge. As for Menu key there already is one of those on some keyboards like on my keyboard the key next to the 'Right Ctrl' key has a picture of a menu on it.

So figure out a way to make a styled black and white OS button maybe would work.
Like having the S hanging from the O or something

02/29/08		 Keyboard are made for computer not for just one OS ! So, this "windows key" MUST be converted as a neutral key like the nice logo made by yaknowwat

And actualy, for me this key is named "Super" :)

03/03/08		 a neutral key wouldn't be bad, but us linux users certainly don't wan't that windows key! we would love tux there, but i would settle for a neutral key-- under the condition that it was used on all machines :)

03/17/08		 From memory, the Asus Eee PC uses a home picture (i.e. a picture of a house). That's good because it is completely OS-independent. A penguin is cute but unprofessional, and has an obvious bias. If it needs to be OS-specific, the Ubuntu logo would be best because it's simple.

Or perhaps you could use a gnu instead! :D

04/14/08		 Or - perhaps Dell should rent this space out to the highest bidder. No doubt Coke, AT&T, and all those cigarette companies that are restricted from advertising in many places would be happy to have their logo there. And they seem far less offensive than a Windows logo on a Linux computer.
