And offer choices of all "sub-choices" of XP and Vista too. That is, offer all editions of XP (Home Edition and Professional) and all editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all Dell PCs.

"Choice of XP and Vista on All Dell systems"

By "All Dell systems" you mean "all Dell PCs", don't you?

If Ubuntu were on the list, I'd vote for this.

But, yes, it's a dup. Many times over. And, I really wouldn't merge it, because the same people have voted for all the others!

Ubuntu becomes a little complicated for non techie's.

But that is hardly the point, is it? This is a matter of what OSes Dell will offer for its machines.

If each category of customer would prefer to at least have the ABILITY to choose, I don't care what disclaimers or qualifiers Dell might like to provide if one TRIES to select Ubuntu, as long as it's on the LIST of choices.

phubert: I know why you demoted - you would rather see "choice of XP and Ubuntu" rather than "choice of XP and Vista", because you want Dell not to offer Vista on any of its PCs.

personally, I want to use Vista on my PowerEdge systems
winoffice

PowerEdge is not the best product line to run Vista. PowerEdge is a line of servers (computers that manage networks), and Vista is not an operating system intended for use on servers. Vista is intended to be used on PCs. Inspiron and XPS therefore will be better choices for Vista, as they are lines of PCs.

How about providing XP drivers for those who downgraded their new Vista laptops... Not all new hardware (the finger scanner on the M1530) have XP drivers. By not having drivers, there is no choice but to stay with Vistdisaster..

wo - my demotions/promotions can be fairly arbitrary AND inconsistent! I'll ADMIT it! :-(

However, it isn't anti-Vista that likely won here, but either (1) that this is a dup or (b) that Ubuntu was _omitted_.

Although I probably voted for "Boycott Vista" and post there, I have always been clear that it isn't in any way practical for DELL to do such.
It would make no sense at all for ANY major PC manufacturer. And, I suspect even those 3rd tier suppliers (2nd?) who specialize in Linux offer Vista, XP and dual boot configurations.

So phubert, Let's get this straight.

Because this idea dosen't MENTION Ubuntu, Dell SHOULDN'T OFFER THE CHOICE of XP and Vista on all of its PCs????

I would understand your demote if the idea said "Don't offer Ubuntu" or something similar. But here, the idea does not mention Ubuntu AT ALL!!!!

Thus I do not understand your demote by any means...I have never seen you being so unreasonable!

I see nothing anti-Ubuntu here whatsoever. Therefore I don't believe that not mentioning Ubuntu is a good enough reason for demoting.

Microsoft is getting sued over their saying vista capable on the XP machines. http://apnews.myway.com//article/20080223/D8UVQCH80.html

So, sugar, is your point that we shouldn't put these labels on there due to possible liability?
Or, do you think the systems just don't need the extra labels in the first place?

Something like an online tool that scans your system for compatability would be nice.. but that would have to be provided by each OS, and probably wouldn't be Dell's job. Especially since the hw "requirements" can change from patches. (2003 x64 R2 vs. SP1 did this to me on one system, if I remember - something to do with SATA RAID)
