partner with APPLE: sell MacOS for Dell hardware

-70 points posted to Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Software by zanlok 02/02/08

Seriously! Consider this: MacOS now runs on top of Linux with PC hardware - Intel and Nvidia. Why not? This can be more choice for the consumer. Also, why not create new products with them in the iPod space.

I suppose it's possible. It'll be a hard sell to Apple; they've got their own computer line to sell, that's why they don't make their OS run on PCs naturally (though the OSx86 project is helping in this area). However, more computers with OS X on them would basically help them achieve the "Windows Effect;" e.g., more people would be using their OS, which would make more people familiar with the OS and get more software developed for it.

dude. where have you been? it is BSD.. but whatever. here's a link & quote:
"Although it shares its name with earlier versions of the Mac OS, Mac OS X is a fundamentally new operating system. This does not mean that all that went before has been left out. Mac OS X still includes many of the features that Mac OS 9 and earlier versions included. [...] Mac OS 9 is also the source of much of the terminology used in Mac OS X."

typical apple: "fundamentally new operating system" which in english means "we took 90% from existing operating systems"

Problem: I seriously doubt Apple would be interested... Dell would have to BUY Apple (hostile takeover) for this to come about... I don't think THAT will happen. And, I wonder, if it COULD take place, whether Dell could keep the Apple 'mystique' alive... I really don't think so. Completely different cultures. Apple as we know it would die.

This is clearly not up to Dell to decide. Its up to Apple. Apple would have to decide to licence OSX on hardware manufacturers other than Apple. I won't say this will never happen, I said Apple would never move to Intel, and they did. But, I'll say its very unlikely, and certainly not up to Dell to decide.

First off, Apple and the products that it makes suck, and Dell is trying to get better and not worse. And second, I already know well enough that Dell (the computer) + Microsoft (the Windows OS) + Intel (the processor and the wireless card if applicable) + NVidia (graphics cards) make the best team on the computer market, both on PCs and elsewhere.

Apple and its products stink? C'mon, WO. They make great products... but do you mean you don't especially LIKE them??? Apple has always been on top when it comes to customer satisfaction in all categories (last time I looked, anyway). USED to be Apple and Dell... dunno where Dell stands now...

Yes phubert, they suck and I do not like them.
