Reduce the size/weight of the power adapter

620 points posted to Laptops, Laptop Power by yagogak Aug 6

Why the Dell power adapter are so big and heavy ? Specially for the M90 and dell XPS 17. Laptop are designed for mobility, the power adapter should be small and light. Apple do small adapter, i think Dell can do that.

And why the pictures of a laptop on the website never show the power adapter ?

"And why the pictures of a laptop on the website never show the power adapter ?"

@yagogak: "And why the pictures of a laptop on the website never show the power adapter ? "

I think you already answered that yourself:

@yagogak: "the Dell power adapter are so big and heavy"

No doubt that's the reason they never show the pictures.

XPS 17xx models use a lot of power, I dont think Dell can reduce the size and weight of the adapters by much. Secondly ,a 17" system is not considered to be a truly portable system by many due to the size and weight of the system, I know of very few people who want to carry a 17" system around with them.

I have a Latitude XT and the power adapter that they are delivering together with it is much smaller (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Power/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=e...) Only the wattage is not that big as with other adapters, so it is possible but has some disadvantages.
Don't know this adapter works with other models.

You can also purchase an adapter of an other brand, which is smaller.

It is very disturbing when You travel a lot and have to carry large backpack filled to top with electronic stuff that you need to work. (all this stuff is heavy and only way to avoid backpain is to carry this in backpack). ANY improvement in design (smaller , lighter! ) is what everybody waits for! This is reeeal issue when you have to 8 times per week show your luggage to customs ... Smaller PowerSupl. and less havy ... please !

A better question is why do we even still have power bricks? I remember when my old Dell LCD had a power converter and my new one no longer does. I'd take a slightly heavier laptop if it meant no more brick at all.
