Allow your customers to change the colour of the laptop lid

360 points posted to Laptops by programatix Jul 5

I'm seeing that more and more colours are offered by Dell (after I purchased my laptop) and it really hurt seeing the colour I wanted so much finally being offered but is out of my reach.

It would be great if Dell allows customers to change the colour of the laptop lid (maybe with a small price) after the system is purchased.

As a spin on your idea, it should be a semi-clear back with RGB LED backlights so that it can be changed at any time! That would be SOO cool!!

The link undead999 given is asking Dell to make coloured cases when building the system. Now it has already been offered and I'm very happy with it. The only thing is, for example, the XPS started with black, white and red (Product RED). Then it changed to black, blue and red (Product RED). I always wanted something reddish but couldn't afford the Product Red package. So I bought a system with blue colour. Now there is pink. What if later Dell decided to sell red without Product Red? I really wanted that colour and is now stuck with blue.

So, if Dell allow the customers (whom already bought the system) to order other coloured lid, it would be great. I don't think Dell will be losing anything as the replaced parts can always be refurbished (to other colours).

For jeopardy's link, Skin It would be nice but :), the Dell logo would be hidden, and it involves sticking a big label over the lid.

That would be great, but it involves Dell designing a new product for it. What I am suggesting here is for the existing systems where customers are allowed to order a new lid (different colour).

Here's the suggested price:
Customers with valid parts warranty: Free of charge (delivery charges might apply if on-site warranty has expired)
Customers whose warranty has expired: Current market price (as charged when building new system) + delivery charges

Reason why it doesn't hurt Dell but instead helps promote Dell products:
Dell always refurbish the parts returned to the factory. Since product under valid parts replacement warranty can have parts replaced free of charge, why not do so with the lid? The process is the same as if the customers broke the parts and call for replacement. Instead, the lid is still intact, just replace and send back to factory to be refurbish (with different colour).

Nope, just the cover of the lid. I had mine replaced before because the system I ordered has the cover dented. The onsite engineer just replaced the cover.

The Skinits look nice... But I was thinking of a plastic sleeve. Most paper binders have one, allowing you to print a standard page and put it on the front. Probably not as professional as the Skinit, but a lot cheaper.

Personally, for smaller laptops I'd like a zip-up cover. Like you get on a Filofax. Multiple colors, of course.

So almost like ye olde M1710 where you could snap-on a clear plastic cover behind which you could put any colour, picture on whatever? Or actual individual uncustomisable snap-on lids?

As far as the whole M1330/M1530/Product (RED) thing goes, Dell recently updated their UK site, and it now says "5 Colours available" (black, white, product (red), pink and blue) on the product page so I think they're about to start offering the complete range. Not sure about a red that isn't Product though.

Is it an issue if it's also Product? If you configure the same M1330 in black and Product (RED), the RED one actually works out to be slightly cheaper, plus you're fighting aids in Africa. Or something. Is it aids specifically or just general poverty?
