Light-Up Dell Logo

290 points posted to Laptops by brokencrystal 06/29/08

Make use of the LCD back-light on Dell notebooks by allowing some of the light to escape out of the back (cover) through the Dell logo causing it to light up bright white. You could make it light up any color to match the notebooks color scheme by using filters (different color plastic) while designing the covers. For example: You purchase a red notebook, you have the option of a white, red, blue color light on your Dell logo. You could also save $15.00 by selecting no light in the logo. While this is mostly for cosmetic, advertisement, and branding purposes, the light on the back could indicate that the notebook is turned on, off, or in power save mode from the back of the unit.

It wouldn't use any more battery power to do this either.

I would rather have the extra lighting going towards my screen than advertising.

1) I agree with Jervis. 2) This kind of overt branding is what I'd expect on kiddies toys or products that have no solid brand name themselves and I believe would be detrimental to Dell. I've heard people LOL at Toshiba's silly lighted 'Satellite' signage and this ain't far off. Please Dell, don't fall for this one - spend your time and money on improving quality, instead.

I would pay extra for this feature. Let people know "Dude, I bought and am a proud owner of a Dell".

You could have interchangeable jewels. You could have a Dell jewel that comes with it. You could have a radio active symbol jewel. You could have a bio hazard symbol jewel. Whatever customization you want to purchase.

The M1730's Dell logo lights up. I think gamers (read: show-offs) are the only market for lights and things like this. Personally I don't mind there being a logo there, as long as it's vaguely subtle and smart (chrome!).
Also, I think it would look strange if that was all that lit up. At least on the XPS there are lights everywhere, probably pulsating along with your game..

However, I agree that if you were going to do that, using it to indicate power state is a good idea. Then again, most laptops have found some way to do this anyway... (Indicator lights on front/side)

optional, sure, no prob. i agree bretta, it didn't say that. if it was like the macs, and you get it without choice, no way.

if it was a bios setting, sure, no prob.

Yes, Bennish... I was agreeing with you in a snary kind of way (by saying I'd never buy it) The rest of the post was more referring to Dawn4598's mystifying "jewels" and the fact that the idea and most comments generally never mentions "optional". I still think light-up signs like Toshiba's are really beneath a business machine and hope they're never put on Latitudes or even Studios as standard fare, though given that a power light is desirable, I think that Lenovo's new light in the dot on the "i" is well placed - that's subtle enough and integrated for my tastes and might please the 'glitz crowd',.

bretta: Do you have an image you could post of Lenovo's new light in the dot on the "i" so we could all see it?

Sorry, BC... This came up with Lenovo's Centrino 2 releases, but I didn't save an image. Try Google Images or Lenovo's site if this is important - it's simply that the dot in the "i" in ThinkPad burns red (IIRC) when power is on.

As I wrote to a similar (duplicate?!) post: Most DJs or artists nowadays have a laptop on stage. You see those illuminated apples everywhere. This is the best branding as people that see artists most probably also want to be as they.
When someone uses another laptop (like one of Dell), you can barely distinguish which brand it is (because now logo glows in the dark). Even Acer now has some models with illuminated logos. If you do it the Apple way, it would be simply a hole in the back of the lid back-lit by the LCD backlight.
