True Inspiron Mini

150 points posted to Laptops by brokencrystal Jun 29

The latest buzz is this Dell Inspiron Mini / Dell E / Dell E Slim.

I am not sure if the Inspiron Mini is the same as the Dell E, but I propose making another mini that is built for power users who need something ultra-portable. Sometimes you don't want people to know you have a notebook on you or you are afraid to set it down and walk away for a minute because it might not be there when you return. It would be nice to have a full featured notebook that would fit in your pocket. I have wasted countless dollars on Pocket PCs that don't run the software I would like them to run and this is the answer to that problem.

I am not proposing you stop making the budget mini, but I am asking that you make a full featured unit the size of the budget mini for those who are willing to shell out the additional cash for the convenience of such a device. It should have an optional docking station for an optical drive and ease of use while not on the road.

Here are some specifications of what I am looking for in a non-budget mini:

Processor – Around 1.6 to 2 GHz
OS – Linux, XP, and Vista Home Basic Edition available
LCD – 8.9 inch widescreen display (no larger than 9 inches)
Webcam – 1 MP Webcam or better
Optical Drive – Optional via docking station
Memory 1-2 GB Shared with video
Hard Drive – Choice of solid state or conventional HD
Video Card – Intel or ATI accelerated graphics
Sound – Stereo speakers built in
Networking – Wireless 802.11x, Ethernet, Bluetooth
Ports – Firewire, USB, VGA/DVI, microphone/headphone ports, dock port (for optional docking station)

Optional accessories – Docking Station, USB mouse, USB keyboard, USB optical drive, SD Card, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, USB hard disk drive, amplified speakers, case, additional power adapters, extended batteries.

Docking station should have a slot or notebook type CD/DVD-RW drive, USB, VGA/DVI, Firewire, microphone/headphone ports, express card slot, SATA notebook drive slot or eSATA port.

It would be nice if it looked like a Studio or and XPS notebook, but much smaller. (pocket sized)

The most important things in the dock would be the express card slot, the optical drive, and the SATA drive or eSATA port.

Keep it pocket sized. Call it the Dell XPS Pocket Rocket.

How different is this to the Dell E's spec?
Also; "power users" using Vista Basic and only 2GB RAM?

I guess the question is, do "power users" really want to be working with such a tiny form factor?
Personally I think for something like that, 12/13" is as small as you could go.. XPS M1210 anyone?

If you are looking to sneak a notebook into a place you are not allowed to have one, the XPS is just too large... Can anyone think of any other reasons?
