Offer Ubuntu Netbook Remix OS on your Ultra portables

The new Ubuntu Netbook Remix OS will be announced the first week of June according to an interview with Canonical chief executive Mark Shuttleworth.

The OS is Tailor made for ultraportable type systems. They have been working with Intel on the project so it should run very well on the Atom Processor

05/25/08		 Oops broke a cardinal IdeaStorm rule here and have asked for Dell to fix it. "Use" should be "Offer" in the title. I don't want anyone freaking out thinking I mean that Dell should only offer Ubuntu.

05/26/08		 LOL we all know winoffice is just anti-Linux period. Anyway I'd like to see OS options of Ubuntu Remix, Ubuntu Mobile and I suppose we could throw in something for the Microsofties too.

05/27/08		 I think Dell is going to release Dell NetBook this June with Ubuntu easy mode (Remix) on it, like in Eee PC. My prediction. Cheers.

05/27/08		 What makes you think they'll use Ubuntu instead of Windows XP? Microsoft have kept XP alive specifically to block Linux distributions getting a solid foot hold in the stupidly small PC user space. Dell are pretty snug with Microsoft.

I would of course welcome Ubuntu of any kind on a Dell.

05/27/08		 As it was pointed out on engadget, Dell is releasing the netbook in June and Shuttleworth is announcing the netbook remix in... June. Coinkidink? I think not.

05/28/08		 Intel is talking about NeBook, Dell is calling NetBook and even Ubuntu. Check this news - Thin Intel Netbook to vie with MacBook Air? , see carefully the images of Netbook, I think they are Ubuntu Remix (easy mode). Cheers.

As a computer, the Eee PC from Asus is intended to be the opposite of intimidating--it's made for children after all. But its potential as a market force is apparently giving chills to its larger industry peers.

Here at Sony's annual Open House event, the senior vice president of Sony's IT product division said the tiny $299 notebook could potentially shift the entire notebook industry.

"If (the Eee PC from) Asus starts to do well, we are all in trouble. That's just a race to the bottom," said Mike Abary.

He means that if mainstream PC buyers start to find their needs met by a lightweight, simply featured, inexpensive portable, it's likely to impel all of the major players in the industry to pile on by lowering their prices. And that's in an industry with already low margins for retailers and manufacturers.

If the Eee PC just catches on with Linux developers, enthusiasts, and the tech-savvy early adopter crowd, that's fine by him. "But if mainstream buyers buy it, then, whoa," Abary said.

[Mark Shuttleworth] I think that depends on how people define a desktop. If people continue to define a desktop as the thing that they run Microsoft Word on, then Windows will retain its position. My sense, though, is that people are increasingly defining the desktop as the thing that they get access to the internet from. In that case, there's a real possibility that we're able to shift people onto different platforms. I think it's the emergence of the internet as the killer application, the thing that describes what you want from the computer, that opens the door to us.

Firefox 3 on Ubuntu is just SO nice; on one of those 'pencil case' systems (which I actually think is a cute description :) under a tree in the park would be a dream :-)

"TG: Recently you publicly criticised the ISO for the way the way it handled the voting on Microsoft's OOXML; how seriously do you think ISO's credibility has been damaged by that episode?

MS Very seriously [for] anybody who is passionate about open standards. The ISO process has traditionally worked very well; it's quite an academic, considered process, but it really wasn't designed to handle a case with very, very vigorous corporate lobbying and an enormous amount of money being spent to try to get a particular outcome. And with hindsight, there were a number of very serious flaws in the process.

TG: As Ubuntu gains in importance, do you feel that you have an increased responsibility to speak out in this way?

MS I think we all have a responsibility to contribute to the public discourse. I have a level of economic independence, which is perhaps a good and a bad thing, but at the very least my opinion can't be bought that easily."

06/12/08		 If Ubuntu comes on this laptop it will sell more than Dell can make. World wide sales would go through the roof. I for one think that having that problem would be a good situation for Dell as I would be one of those happily waiting for my UMPC running Ubuntu that would be on backorder :-)

06/12/08		 If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. The days of over bloated super powerful PCs are dead. The days of small, light, quick laptops are in. Someone coined this phenomenon 'The race to the bottom.' I agree 100%. Dell, if you release this laptop with Ubuntu standard, I will order it the day it hits your website

One of the biggest complaints on site is that we don't know Dell is looking. Perhaps when you have a meeting to discuss things you add the tags right afterward to speed up the feedback process. It doesn't look good when ideas on the front page go weeks without a status tag. Thanks for the quick response.

Don't hide it in some "obscure" section of the site.

if Dell offers the Mini-dell with ubuntu remix but hidden in the website, then i don't care for dell any longer, i will rather purchase a netbook from Asus, HP, msi, Acer, etc. then.

06/18/08		 We have the advantage here because you don't subsidize a netbook with bloatware if you're sane ;)
So if they cost the same, Dell has profit incentive to sell many more with Ubuntu than with windows.
