Make SSD drives standard on laptops!

currently that would add $700.00 to cost for each system, for a 64GB SSD.
Some people want more storage space than 64GB.

It would be nice to see these as an option for all laptops, but not standard. SSD drives thus far have far less capacity for the price. Spending more to get less doesn't appeal to the average consumer.

It wouldn't add $700 at all. Dell get discounts on bulk orders from suppliers just like everybody else does. If Dell were to totally abandon traditional hard drives in favor of SSDs that would add up to one Dell of a discount. I'd say a more realistic number would be $200 of a price hike. Which wouldn't last for long. If Dell did this, other manufacturers would follow suit and the price would drop further as SSDs became the default backing storage on laptops.

Until you can get SSD with larger storage space, I would prefer use the present standard.

Well old style hard drives could be kept as an option.

aikiwolfie,

todays add on price is $700, yes i understand the cost would go down with volume purchases, and as the technology matures. Even @ $200 more per system this doesnt allow dell to compete with HP, sony, gateway, etc on price which Dell is focused on doing at least for lower end systems.

mabye in a couple years when when the price goes down and they get to at least 250GB.

Apple apparently account for 66% in store desktop PC sales at the beginning of the year. If Apple can sell at a much higher price point then why can't Dell sell at a slightly higher price point. Isn't a better product worth paying a little bit more for?

The price of SSDs is never going to go down unless someone bites the bullet and busts a move! Quite a few people on this forum complain about Dell always being second. For not being forward thinking enough. But on the flip side when someone suggests something like this the reply is always "maybe in a couple of years". Dell will never be first unless it's customers are willing to adopt new technologies. Otherwise you're all just buying the same old same old products over and over again.

crud no! the speed is only half the reason i use flash memory. the other part is because flash drives are very movable. i use the internal platter drive as storage space

SSD (solid State Drives) are still a very new technology and is not only EXTREMELY expensive but also has another massive drawback. This is the fact that they can only be used a certain number of times before the components that actually store the data become damaged and incapable of storing anymore data.

SSDs are expected to last as long as hard drives. That's about 5 years. If your hard drive is more than 5 years old you're on borrowed time. So it's not such a huge draw back these days. Hard drives are also more prone to shock damage and general wear and tear. There are more moving parts to go wrong in a traditional hard drive than there are in SSDs. Oh wait! SSDs don't have any moving parts!

Does anybody worry about how long an iPod will last? I don't think so.

"Make SSD drives standard on laptops!"

Why? Demoted.
No reason? Demoted.

The why would be because they are more power efficient and Samsung will be shipping 256GB versions at the end of the year. Which puts them on par with laptop hard drives. Read and write performance is also supposed to be comparable. At least with the more common 5400 RPM models.
